He became widely known for his leading role in the rescue of the school soccer team in the 2018 Tham Luang cave rescue. He is a former Moor End pupil and Huddersfield New College student.[1] Caving and rescuesRescuesIn 2018, Mallinson helped rescue a youth soccer team in the Tham Luang cave rescue[2]. Poor visibility, cave debris, and cold temperatures were all obstacles to cave diving in the rescue of the team. Parts of the cave were so narrow that the children had to be pushed in front of the divers. At other times, the children were held close to the chest or held out to the side.[3] In 2004, Mallinson was one of the divers sent out to Mexico to rescue British military personnel trapped in a flooded cave system, along with dive partner Rick Stanton.[4] ExpeditionsMallinson has organised numerous caving and cave diving expeditions abroad, the most well-known of which have been to Pozo Azul in Northern Spain. Mallinson, along with Rick Stanton, John Volanthen and Rene Houben set numerous records within the cave establishing the longest distance underwater section of cave to be passed in the world.[5] He was also heavily involved in expeditions to Huautla, Mexico diving alongside Chris Jewell.[6] Awards and honoursIn November 2018, Mallinson and five other members of the British cave rescue team were given the Pride of Britain 2018 award for "Outstanding Bravery" for the Tham Luang incident. The rescued children attended the award ceremony, in London.[7] See also
