Jeffrey Bruno, Ph.D., was one of the first psychologists to use the term "Nutritional Psychology" in the early 1990's to describe the use of nutritional therapies to treat mental health and behavioral challenges. He ran the Center for Nutritional Psychology from 1993 to 1997, in Pacifica, CA. The Center provided support to hundreds of children struggling with symptoms of ADHD, with the Feingold diet, probiotics, personalized nutrients, and microalgae enhanced nutrition. Furthermore, Dr. Bruno was one of the first psychologists to be trained by [https://www.walshinstitute.org/ Bill Walsh], Ph.D., whose ground-breaking work identifies the primary biotypes of nutrient deficiencies associated with mental health disorders.

Early Life

Jeffrey was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the second-born son of Phyllis and Anthony Bruno. His brother, Tony Bruno, M.D. is a practicing radiologist in Reno, Nevada. Anthony Bruno, Sr., was an amateur hypnotist who inspired his son's to learn about hypnosis and introduced them to the study of consciousness. Through early experiments in hypnosis they were able to document a range of phenomenon from extra-sensory perception to out-of-body remote viewing. During the 1970s and 1980s, Dr. Bruno's interests expanded from hypnosis to meditation; from eastern psycho-spiritual philosophies to integrative health care.

Education

Bruno attended Lawrence University, completing a student-designed, interdisciplinary major in anthropology, psychology and religion. He spent a year as a student living abroad in India, where he studied yoga under B.K.S. Iyengar. The work of Dr. Elmer Green, who in the 1960s at the Menninger Clinic pioneered the use of biofeedback and studied yogic voluntary control of bodily processes (such as heartbeat) which are normally considered non-voluntary, very much inspired Dr. Bruno to complete a biofeedback internship at St. Elizabeth Hospital, in Appleton, Wisconsin. Also, Dr. Bruno traveled to India, and studied yoga under the B.K.S. Iyengar and visited many yoga centers.

Upon returning to college; together with fellow student Gregg Jacobs, they built one of the first floatation isolation tanks housed within a University campus. Later this float tank was relocated to St. Elizabeth Hospital, becoming one of the first floatation tanks used clinically in a hospital. Jeffrey continued his research in the use of Restricted Environmental Stimulation Therapy (R.E.S.T.) with his master's thesis work at the University of Wisconsin - Madison and subsequent research work with John Turner, Ph.D. and Thomas Fine, M.A., associated with the Medical College of Ohio - Toledo.

Dr. Bruno (1981) later opened a nonprofit research and treatment center in Toledo Ohio, the R.E.S.T. & Self-Regulation Institute. The center offered biofeedback, flotation tank and alternative healing therapies (e.g., acupressure workshops and meditation) were offered, along with counseling services.

Dr. Bruno earned his master's of science degree in general experimental psychology from the University of Wisconsin - Madison and his doctorate in clinical psychology from the California Institute of Integral Studies, San Francisco. Dr. Bruno's doctoral dissertation at C.I.I.S. was the first experimental research to demonstrate significant correlations between observable iris patterns and the "Big 5" personality traits.

Dr. Bruno completed graduate-level field research at India's Pune University department of Experimental Psychology. He continued to study yoga under B.K.S. Iyengar and meditation with Tibetan Lama Thubten Yeshe and Lama Zopa Rinpoche. While at the University of Madison - Wisconsin, Jeffrey continued his meditation practice under the guidance of Geshe Lhundub Sopa, the first Tibetan-Buddhist Geshe to become an American University professor. The Geshe degree in Tibet is the highest academic honor. Moreover, Geshe Lhundub Sopa was His Holiness the Dali Lama's debate partner during their monastic studies.

Nutritional Psychology

Julie Ross (2003) author of "The Mood Cure" and expert in the use of nutritional therapies to treat addiction and mood issues, independently began to use the term, Nutritional Psychology, around the same time. Nutritional Psychology is similar but different to Orthomolecular Psychiatry. Orthomolecular Psychiatry took a more medical approach to using nutrition as a drug substitute. "Pfeiffer's Law", stated that "For every drug that benefits a patient, there is a natural substance that can achieve the same effect."[1] Nutritional Psychology developed not from a medical or psychiatric perspective, but from a lifestyle orientation, especially diet, as well as larger systematic environmental factors connected to food, such as consumer marketing and food processing, were important factors for mental health.

Writing

Dr. Bruno (2014) wrote "Eat Light & Feel Bright: Microalgae Solutions for Individual and Planetary Health." This book references hundreds of studies to describe how ancient microscopic organisms, such as blue-green algae, can help to rebuild our health and to restore our environment. One of the most comprehensive books on the health benefits of microalgae, referencing nearly 800 scientific studies.

Sensory Healing

More recently, Dr. Bruno has explored the use of sensory healing methods for psychological care. CIIS classmate and friend, Brian Breiling, author of "Light Years Ahead: The Illustrated Guide to Full Spectrum and Colored Light in Mindbody Healing" (1996); introduced Dr. Bruno to the use of color and light assisted psychotherapy method. Moreover, Dr. Bruno became a long-time student of Dr. Steven Vasquez, who developed [https://ettia.org/ Emotional Transformation Therapy] (ETT). ETT uses visual stimulation in concert with psychological support to rapidly alleviate psychological distress. Dr. Bruno also trained in Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing (E.M.D.R.) and Brain Spotting methods. Subsequently, Dr. Bruno brought the first Sensora and Sensory Learning programs into a psychologist practice. Moreover, Dr. Bruno emphasizes how sensory-based healing methods effectively target thalamic-cortical dysrhythmias (first proposed by Llinas R.) to explain how sensory-based tools can be effectively used in mental health care.

Personal Life

Dr. Bruno married Linda Kunz and they birthed a daughter, named Tylia. Linda is a medical herbalist, nutritionist, and intuitive iridologist. Both Linda and Jeffrey studied for six years with Dr. John Ray, naturopathic and chiropractic doctor; inventor of "Body Electronics," an alternative form of healing that combines nutrition, acupressure, and process-orientated psychology. Body Electronic was an early form of healing that is currently better known as, "Energy Psychology."

Carpe 3Diem

Dr. Jeffrey Bruno was a subject in Theo Schear's multimedia project [https://www.carpe3diem.wiki/ Carpe 3Diem] hosted by the San Francisco Center for Spiritual Living. Schear created portraits of each of the congregants, including the portrait above, to be used as the profile image on a Wikipedia page for each subject. The project asserts that anybody could qualify as "notable or significant enough to be recorded" if properly represented. The portraits and Wikipedia pages were presented as a whole on February 18th, 2018 by a 3D avatar in the likeness of Mr. Schear.[2]
