Jeffrey Harris - artist born Leeds Uk 1932

Introduction

Jeffrey Harris, born 1932 Leeds, United Kingdom is a British artist. He studied at Leeds College of Art before moving to Cornwall. He lived and worked in St Ives Cornwall during the 1950s and 60s and was part of the West Penwith, British abstract painters based in St Ives.[1] Harris currently lives and works in Adelaide, Australia.

Education

Harris majored in painting, printmaking and drawing at Leeds College of Art (1949 to 1952). Victor Pasmore, lecturer at Leeds College of Art, was an early influence. In 1953 he was awarded a Leeds College of Art Travelling Scholarship to study in Paris.

St Ives, Cornwall

In 1956, Harris moved to the arts community of St Ives, Cornwall, where he lived until 1970. Harris was part of the St Ives arts community.[2] [3] He was a member of the Penwith Society of Artists and regular exhibitor of paintings, wooden reliefs and etchings. [4]

Painting

Harris’ work is concerned with colour, abstraction, place and identity. Landscapes of West Penwith and Australian are abstract or semi figurative paintings on masonite or canvas. Figurative elements appear in a series of portraits of a Yorkshire childhood and his father’s work as a tailor. [5]

Collaborations – music/ spoken word poetry

Harris collaborated with Jazz musician Derek Pascoe Derek_Pascoe on Dylan Thomas's Under Milkwood that was narrated by Harris. It was performed at Elder Hall, University of Adelaide and released on CD by Fine Poets Australia.

Exhibitions

Harris exhibited in London's Rowan and Drian Galleries during the 1950s and 60s and in Cornwall at the Penwith and Fore Street Gallery, St Ives, Passmore Edward Gallery, Newlyn and the Plymouth Art Gallery Penwith Gallery exhibiting with Cornish artists including Patrick Heron, Peter Lanyon, Tony O’Malley, Roger Hilton, Willie Barns Graham.[6] He showed at the Robin Gibson Gallery (Sydney) and in 2012 the South Australia Government and ArtsSA supported a survey show at [https://www.tafesa.edu.au/adelaide-college-of-the-arts/light-square-gallery Light Square Gallery].
