}}Jennifer A. Love is an American chemist at the University of British Columbia (UBC). Her research is focused on the use of transition metal in homogeneous catalysis towards the synthesis of molecules for biological or material uses. In 2016, she became a Senior Advisor to the Provost on Women Faculty at UBC.

Early Life and Education

Love was born in the state of New York, outside of Rochester. She began her scientific education at Allegheny College in Pennsylvania, conducting her undergraduate thesis in chemistry with Prof. Ed Walsh. She later went on to do her PhD with Prof. Paul A. Wender at Stanford University working on the design and development of novel rhodium-catalyzed [5+2] cycloadditions.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9] After graduating, she was a National Institutes of Health Postdoctoral Fellow at the California Institute of Technology with Prof. Robert H. Grubbs. There she worked on ruthenium-based catalysts for cross metathesis.[10][11][12][13]

Career

Love began her independent career at UBC in 2003 and she is currently a full professor in the Department of Chemistry. The focus of her research is on bridging the fields of synthetic organic and inorganic chemistry. It spans the development of new platinum, nickle, iridium, and rhodium coordination complexes, the use of these catalyst towards making and breaking C-N, C-O, and C-S bonds, and the activation of C-F and S-H bonds. She has published more than 70 articles in various journals and collaborated with various scientist.

Love has served as Chair of the Inorganic Division of the Society for Chemistry, where she collaborated in developing new research opportunities between Canada, the UK and the US.[14] She is also the Associate Editor for Catalysis Science and Technology.[14] Love has been part of several conference committees, such as the 12th International Conference on Heteroatom Chemistry.[15]

Outreach

Love is an advocate for equity for women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). She was on the committee for the Vivien M. Srivastava Memorial Endowment (a Faculty of Science endowment to support female graduate students and postdocs in science and technology) and organized a ‘Women in Science’ forum at the Peter Wall Institute for Advanced Studies.[16] Additionally, Love has mentored several women in the Department of Chemistry at UBC and organized a Gordon Research Conference Power Hour (the event addresses the challenges women face in science and support the professional growth of women in our communities by providing an open forum for discussion and mentoring).[17]

In 2016, Love was selected as the Senior Advisor on Women Faculty.[16][18] This position works with the Faculty Deans, Human Resources, Faculty Relations, the Equity and Inclusion Office and other units at UBC to create policies and practices that promote equity for women faculty. She was reappointed in 2018. During this time, she created the Faculty Data Dashboard which collects and compiles faculty salaries, parental leaves, tenure tracks and other data points by gender in order to identify the issues leading to gender discrepancies at UBC.[19] She continues to develop evidence-based recommendations for the university.

Awards and Honours

  • IntelliSyn Pharma Research Excellence Award (2018)[20]
  • Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellowship for Experienced Researchers (2012)
  • CNC IUPAC travel award (2011)[21]
  • UBC Science Killam Teaching Award (2009)[22]
  • AstraZeneca Canada Award in Chemistry (2008)[23]
