Bailie's music is notable for its combined use of field recordings with acoustic instruments and her work with multimedia — particularly video — installations. Discussing the role of field recordings in her piece 'Babel' (from Artificial Environment No.8, 2012/13) for piano and tape, Bailie notes that 'a musical proposition exists within the accidental narrative of the field recording, to be outlined by the piano part and accessed by a listener willing to play his or her part in this framing of the sound of real life.'[3] Bailie's music is the subject of a detailed profile by Stephanie Power in a 2010 Tempo (journal) article.[4] Power notes Bailie's processing of field recordings as a way of unfolding them: [...] Bailie utilises a process whereby live or field-recorded audio is periodically frozen into a sustained sound — often [...] into a chord. Through such means, slowing time and freezing time become ways of revealing things about our world that might otherwise escape our perception, and of revealing things about the various media through which we perceive and describe that world.[4]Bailie’s music has been performed by groups such as Ensemble Musikfabrik, EXAUDI, Ensemble Mosaik, Ensemble Nadar, Apartment House (ensemble), Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart, The London Sinfonietta, The BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra among others. Her work has been performed at events such as the Donaueschinger Musiktage, Venice Biennale, Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, Darmstadt, the Borealis festival and Ultima Oslo Contemporary Music Festival, and the Transit festival.[5] Curation and other rolesBailie, along with composer Matthew Shlomowitz, is the founder and artistic director of Plus-minus ensemble.[6] She has worked as guest curator at SPOR Festival (2010) and curator and producer of the Cut and Splice Festival for BBC Radio 3 (2015). Bailie has also taught composition at City, University of London, Royal Academy of Music, Aarhus/Aalborg and at the 2014 edition of the Darmstadt International Summer Courses.[7] In 2016 she was a guest of the DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Program.[8] Bailie was a juror for the Kranichsteiner musikpreis at the 2016 and 2018 editions of the Darmstadt International Summer Courses.[9] DiscographyAppears on:
