JoAnn A. Yukimura is an American politician serving as a member of the Kauai County Council since 2010.[1] She previously served as a council member from 1976 to 1980 and 1984 to 1988, and as mayor of Kauai from 1988 to 1994[2]. Yukimura was the first mayor of Japanese-American ancestry in the United States.[3] She would return to politics as council member again from 2002 to 2008.[4][5][6] Early Life and CareerYukimura was born on Kauai to Jiro and Jennie Yukimura.[7] She graduated from Kauai High School in 1967.[7] After high school, she attended Stanford University for undergraduate studies and the University of Washington School of Law.[7] Yukimura would return to Kauai after law school, working for Legal Aid Society of Hawaii and engaging in environmental activism.[7] She led Stop Highrises on Kauai (SHOK), challenging the construction of an 8-story hotel that broke local laws that limited buildings to four stories.[8] PoliticsKauai County Council 1976-1980Yukimura's first foray into electoral politics in the 1976 Kauai County Council race was successful.
