John Edward Burgess, (born 8 March 1932 in London; died 13 March 2014) Joined EMI in Press and Promotions in 1951, and after the company acquired Capitol Records he spent his time promoting Frank Sinatra Dean Martin and Peggy Lee. Always more interested in making music than promoting it, he made the transition to assistant producer working with EMI record producer, A&R manager and songwriter Norman Newell. 1 [1]. In 1959 Burgess asked John Barry to arrange songs written by Johnny Worth AKA Les Vandyke for the young singer Adam Faith. 2. [2] This collaboration, starting with the song what do you want produced by Burgess, resulted in Parlophone Records very first No 1 hit record, and launched Adam Faiths career giving him his first No 1 hit record 3. The Beatles - All These Years - Extended Special Edition: Volume ..., Volume 1 By Mark Lewisohn [3] [https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=IcFBLtl7sq8C&printsec=frontcover&dq=Please+please+me+gordon+thomson&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0CBQQ6AEwAGoVChMIid_UpOr5xwIVQlsUCh35lgHt#v=snippet&q=john%20Burgess&f=false]"Please please me" and a subsequent No 1 record for the pair produced by Burgess with Poor me. It was such a successful collaboration with John Barry and Johnny Worth, that Faith said "Johnny Worth, John Barry and myself were such a team that when I got my silver disc for 'What Do You Want', I seriously thought about splitting it in three." 4. Burgess produced records for Freddie and the Dreamers,Matt Monro, and Peter and Gordon. After Burgess changed their name from "Manfred Mann and the Manfreds", Burgess signed Manfred Mann to EMI, and became their producer. 5. [4].They got their first break in 1964 when they were asked to write the theme tune to the popular ITV show Ready Steady Go. The resulting song "5-4-3-2-1" helped by weekly TV exposure, rose to No5 in the UK singles charts Burgess left EMI in 1965, and joined forces with 3 other young fellow EMI producers including Sir George Martin, taking along with them much of EMIs control over their major acts at the time, namely The Beatles, The Hollies and Manfred Mann, to form Associated Independent Recording (AIR) with Sir George Martin, Ron Richards and Peter Sullivan It was a huge risk for the four young salaried producers, as it went against the norms in the Industry at the time, and one flop record would fold their new enterprise 6. They were the first to negotiate a royalty from the record companies for the master recordings rather than a flat fee. 7. [5] As an independent record producer he continued to produce records for Freddie and the Dreamers, The Hollies, Peter and Gordon, Matt Monro, Manfred Mann and many others. 9. [6] John Burgess was the producer. 10. [7]of the acclaimed album The Five Faces of Manfred Mann which peaked at #3 on the UK album chart [8]and was the first studio album by British beat/R&B group Manfred Mann 11. [9]. Their first hit single Do Wah Diddy Diddy was taken from this album, and released in June 1964. It reached No 1 in the UK, Canadian and US charts. The album was then released in the United Kingdom on 11 September 1964 by His Master's Voice. In late October/early November, the album was released in Canada by Capitol Records. The Canadian track listing was almost the same as the UK version, except it included the hit "Do Wah Diddy Diddy" instead of "I've Got My Mojo Working". The U.S. version, released in February 1965, also charted on the Billboard 200, peaking at #1. 12. CHECK THIS!!!!! [10] The album has been called "one of the great blues-based British invasion albums. In October of 1964 Burgess auditioned The High Numbers later The Who in studio 3 at Abbey Road Studios. 13. [11]. The band played three or four covers, and though Burgess was interested in hearing any other original material the band may have to offer, Pete Townshend recalled Burgess had said, "We think you are a great little R&B band, but The Beatles have set the trend of groups writing their own material. You've really just got to do it". The band walked away without a contract, but within 10 weeks they had their first hit with I Can't Explain written by Pete Townshend. Following the session, Burgess had famously written to the bands manager Kit Lambert, saying he didn't know if the band had anything to offer, but that he would like to hear more of their original songs. 14 [12] [13] A copy of the letter was sold at auction in 2010. 15. [14].The Who later, and without Burgesses permission, reproduced this rejection letter, and it was enclosed with their 1970 album release[15] live at leeds along with other reproduced collectors items In 1968 Burgess co-produced the orchestral score with George Martin and Ron Richards at Abbey Road Studios for The Beatles, Yellow Submarine animated film, with engineer Geoff Emerick [16] The orchestral material was released as side 2 of the album Yellow Submarine by The Beatles, and in 1970 the album was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Original Score Written for a Motion Picture or a Television Special. Associated Independent Recording (AIR)In 1965 John Burgess formed Associated Independent Recording (AIR) with co-founders Sir George Martin from EMI, Ron Richards also from EMI and Peter Sullivan from Decca They became the first group of independent record producers at a time when many producers were still salaried, and they were earning £50.00 or under per week, and not receiving any royalties from the records they produced[17] Between the four of them, they produced many of the major acts of the time, including "The Beatles","CIlla Black",and 'Gerry and the Pacemakers" among others, and the magnitude of these acts somewhat forced the hands of the major labels to hire them.[https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=p_UQH6L_n14C&pg=PA208&dq=%22John+Burgess%22+record+producer&hl=en&sa=X&redir_esc=y#v=onepage&q=%22John%20Burgess%22%20record%20producer&f=false]"The Art of Music Production: The Theory and Practice"] AIR financed and produced the recordings of artists, negotiating a royalty for the finished masters from the record companies. Their headquarters were in Park Street Mayfair London. The producers hired studio time at Abbey Road Chappells, and Decca when needed, but their plan was always to open their own state of the art studio in London, and within 2 years, by 1967 the group had earned enough to finance the new venture, Air Studios,' A studio built by producers for producers' and premises were found at 124 Oxford Street, London on the 4th floor above the Peter Robinson department store[18] Air Studios opened on 6th October 1970 and today, Associated Independent Recording (AIR) remains one of the world's pre-eminent recording studios[19] In 1979 they opened a second state of the art studio on the Caribbean island of Montserrat. This studio was destroyed by Hurricane Hugo ten years later.[20] and the studio was forced to close after 10 years of attracting the greatest names in the business to record there [21] In the mid 80s John Burgess and Sir George Martin formed a partnership with John Jones and Dee Long, representative of a new generation of producers involved with British acts such as Duran Duran. The quartet of producers opened a new MIDI studio located in the AIR facility. During 1987 they also purchased two Fairlight CMI III models (at a cost of £35,000 each) for the burgeoning Midi Suite. They also were early adopters of then new fully Midi integrated ATARI STf for Midi control and sequencing using the grand-daddy of modern-day Cubase - Steinberg's Pro 24 III. Burgess was the managing director of Air Studios, and in addition was Sir George Martins manager[22] Burgess eventually switched his involvement more to the London theatre, and was involved in a hit revival of Guys and Dolls among many other shows. He produced the group Toto in the '90s, and remained at the helm at Air Studios even after it had been bought out by Chrysalis Records and Air management moved to the Chrysalis head office, on Stratford place. London W1 [23] in 1987, and when it moved in 1991 to its current location at the magnificent Lyndhurst Hall, Lyndhurst Road, Hampstead, London Earlier songsSome earlier songs produced by AIR Studios’ John Burgess, and mostly recorded at E.M.I. Studios, Abbey Road [24]
