John R. Salter, Jr. (February 14, 1934 – January 7, 2019) was an American educator and civil rights activist. He was a participant at the Jackson, Mississippi Woolworth lunch counter sit-in, during the Civil Rights Movement. Salter was a sociology professor at historically black Tougaloo College in Mississippi, and NAACP youth adviser in the early 1960s, working closely with Mississippi NAACP leader Medgar Evers. In May 1963, Salter joined black and white Tougaloo students during a sit-in at a segregated lunch counter at the Woolworth’s store in downtown Jackson. A mob of young white people doused them with sugar, mustard, and ketchup and attacked Salter with brass knuckles and broken glass.[1][2] Salter grew up in Arizona and worked as a labor union organizer in the U.S. Southwest before moving to Mississippi.[3] He died at his home in Pocatello, Idaho, on January 7, 2019.[4] References1. ^{{cite news|url=https://www.clarionledger.com/story/news/local/2019/01/10/civil-rights-activist-historic-lunch-miss-counter-protest-photo-dies-john-sater/2542219002/|title=Civil Rights activist in historic Jackson lunch counter protest photo dies at 84|date=January 10, 2019|work=Clarion-Ledger, Jackson, Mississippi}} 2. ^{{cite news|url=http://www.philly.com/news/nation-world/john-salter-jr-activist-lunch-counter-protest-photo-dies-20190110.html|title=John Salter Jr., activist from lunch counter protest photo, dies at 84|date=January 10, 2019|work=philly.com}} 3. ^{{cite news|title=Civil Rights Movement Veterans:Hunter Bear|url=https://www.crmvet.org/vet/hunter.htm}} 4. ^{{cite news|title=John R.
