}}Jonathan N. Thon is a Canadian scientist, entrepreneur and educator known for his expertise in the physiology and production of human platelets. He is the co-founder and CEO of Platelet BioGenesis Inc. of Cambridge, Massachusetts, and a lecturer at Harvard Medical School, Boston, Massachusetts.[1]

Personal

Thon was born October 25, 1981 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. His family immigrated to Toronto, Canada in 1986. He earned his bachelor’s degree in biotechnology and genetic engineering in 2004 from McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario.[2] In 2008, he earned his Ph.D. in biochemistry and molecular biology from the University of British Columbia, Vancouver.[3]

Scientific career

As an assistant professor in hematology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, a teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School, Thon’s research focused on the cytoskeletal mechanics and signaling pathways regulating platelet formation in the body, leading to the identification of intermediate stages and triggers of platelet production. Thon’s work led to the discovery of preplatelets, anucleate cells that are an intermediate stage in platelet production.[4][5][6][7]

Working with Dr. Joseph Italiano at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and David A. Weitz, Ph.D. and Linas Mazutis, Ph.D., at Harvard University, Thon co-developed a biomimetic human platelet bioreactor to generate functional human platelets from precursor cells.[8][9][10] This achievement was named #26 on Discover magazine’s Top 100 Stories of 2014.[11]

Thon’s work has also led to advances in the elucidation of gene-transcription and protein translation pathways regulating megakaryocyte differentiation; identification of mechanisms regulating the deterioration of platelets in storage; and understanding of other roles platelets play in human disease.[12][13][14][15][16]

Platelet Biogenesis

Thon, Italiano, Linas Mazutis and Sven Karlsson co-founded Platelet BioGenesis in 2014. The company first occupied space in Harvard University’s iLab before moving to LabCentral, a well-known biotechnology incubator in Kendall Square, as a result of winning the Golden Ticket prize sponsored by biotech giant Amgen.[17] It later moved to the Venture Development Center at the University of Massachusetts, Boston. It moved to its current location in the Nest.bio company incubator in Cambridge in 2018.

In 2015, Platelet BioGenesis was a recipient of the first round of Milestone Achievement Program Grants awarded by the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center, a quasi-public agency tasked with spurring development in biotechnology in Massachusetts.[18]

The company raised $10 million in Series A venture financing in June 2017.[19] The firm has secured grants from the US Department of Defense.[20]

Thon joined the firm full-time as CEO and chief scientific officer in August 2017 upon Platelet BioGenesis’ close of their Series A financing round and after securing his green card, enabling him to work full-time in the US.[21]

Patents

2017, co-inventor, “System and Method for Biomimetic Fluid Processing”[22]

2015, co-inventor, “System and Method for Producing Blood Platelets” (pending)[22]

2013, co-inventor, “System and Method for Biomimetic Fluid Processing”[23]

Awards

2015, Arch Award, McMaster University[24]

2011, Honorary Medal of Graduation, Kitasato University[25]

2009, Young Investigator Research Award, The International Society of Thrombosis and Haemostasis[26]
