Kopser was raised in Lexington, Kentucky.[1] Kopser attended the U.S. Military Academy, where he trained as an aerospace engineer.[2][2] He served at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas, and was deployed to Iraq for two tours of duty, in 2004 and 2006-2007. He earned the Bronze Star Medal.[1] He then worked at The Pentagon on Future Combat Systems[3] and for the Chief of Staff of the United States Army. He retired as a lieutenant colonel in 2013.[1] Kopser returned to Austin, where he ran the University of Texas at Austin's Reserve Officers' Training Corps program, and founded RideScout, a trip-planning app.[1] RideScout later sold to Daimler AG.[3] He continued to work for RideScout under Daimler's ownership until Donald Trump's victory in the 2016 United States presidential election turned him to politics.[1] In the 2018 elections, Kopser is running for the United States House of Representatives in {{ushr|TX|21}}. Kopser advanced to the runoff election against Mary Wilson, and won. He faced Chip Roy in the November 6 general election,[4] and lost, though he received more votes than any other Democrat running for the U.S. House in Texas. Kopser may run against Roy again in the 2020 elections.[5] Kopser and his wife, Amy, have three children. They live in Austin, Texas.[1][3] References1. ^1 2 3 4 5 {{cite web|author=Chuck Lindell |url=https://www.statesman.com/news/20180509/in-run-for-congress-kopser-leans-on-military-business-experience |title=In run for Congress, Kopser leans on military, business experience - News - Austin American-Statesman - Austin, TX |publisher=Statesman.com |date=September 25, 2018 |accessdate=October 30, 2018}} 2. ^{{cite web|last=Lavelle |first=Marianne |url=https://insideclimatenews.org/news/23102018/scientist-congress-house-race-candidate-Kopser-Casten-Luria-climate-change-trump-agenda |title=A Record Number of Scientists Are Running for Congress, and They Get Climate Change |publisher=InsideClimate News |date=October 23, 2018 |accessdate=October 30, 2018}} 3. ^1 2 3 {{cite web|author=Ben Guarino and Laurie McGinley, The Washington Post |url=https://www.lmtonline.com/news/article/2018-is-the-year-of-scientists-running-for-12727128.php |title=2018 is the year of scientists running for Congress - Laredo Morning Times |publisher=Lmtonline.com |date=March 4, 2018 |accessdate=October 30, 2018}} 4. ^{{cite web|author=Asher Price |url=https://www.statesman.com/NEWS/20180523/Joseph-Kopser-to-face-Chip-Roy-in-21st-Congressional-District-matchup |title=Joseph Kopser to face Chip Roy in 21st Congressional District matchup - News - Austin American-Statesman - Austin, TX |publisher=Statesman.com |date=September 22, 2018 |accessdate=October 30, 2018}} 5. ^https://www.statesman.com/news/20181122/democrats-see-opportunity-in-2020-in-changing-texas-congressional-landscape External links{{CongLinks|votesmart=177325}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Kopser, Joseph}} |
