Joseph Kupelwieser (14 January 1791 – 2 February 1866) was an Austrian playwright.

Life

Kupelwieser was born in Vienna. He grew up as the son of the manufacturer Johann Kupelwieser in Lower Austria (Markt Piesting, Guntramsdorf and Wiener Neustadt), but in 1801/1802 he also attended the Akademisches Gymnasium and the educational institute of Giannatassio del Rio[1] in Vienna. Afterwards he studied briefly at the Oriental Academy, but then became a soldier and unsuccessful ironware manufacturer. With his wife Anna Nödl (wed on 17 May 1812) he had at least five children. He was one of the most active members of the Unsinnsgesellschaft[2] (1817-1818), his nickname there was Blasius Lecks, and in the {{ill|Ludlamshöhle|de}} he had the pseudonym Domwiesel der Eiltrichter.

From 1821 Kupelwieser worked for two years as dramaturge at the Kärntnertortheater, where he began his activities as a translator, theatre poet and librettist. His love affair with the actress Emilie Neumann - the first actress of Rosamunde by Helmina von Chézy in the Theater an der Wien - led him to leave his wife and family and to engage in Graz, Preßburg (where he was also theatre director in 1825), Budapest and Agram (1829 also briefly theatre director). From 1836 to 1862, he worked at the Theater in der Josefstadt in Vienna, again as a dramaturge.

Together with his younger brother Leopold Kupelwieser he belonged to he "Schubertianern" (friends of Franz Schubert). In 1823 he wrote the libretto for Schubert's opera Fierrabras, which was approved by the censors. However, the opera was not performed during the lifetime nor Schubert's. From 1824, Kupelwieser was also successful as a theatre poet; several of his plays were performed in Vienna and Graz.

Kupelwieser died in Rudolfsheim, (today part of Vienna) at age 75.
