About Joseph L. Jones

Joseph L. Jones received his bachelors of arts degree from Philander Smith College and masters and Ph.D. from Clark-Atlanta University all in political science. His doctoral dissertation was entitled “Hegemonic Rhythms: The Role of Hip-hop in American Public Diplomacy” where Dr. Jelani Cobb served on his dissertation committee.[1]

Prior to his appointment, he was the Founding Executive Director of the Social Justice Institute at Philander Smith College. He also was an American Council on Education Fellow for the 2013-2014 class where he spent a semester at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock shadowing Chancellor Dr. Joel Anderson.[2]

Arkansas Baptist College Presidency

Jones was named the 14th President of Arkansas Baptist College in September 2016.[3]

During his fifteen-month tenure, he led the effort to remove the Show Cause sanction from the Higher Learning Commission off the college.[4]

Additionally, the college had a financial shortfall and Jones and his administrators took a 30% and 20% cut in their salaries to assist in balancing the books.[5]

Jones was credited for developing the colleges first comprehensive strategic plan and academic improvements.[6]

In December of 2017 one magazine described Jones as reviving the college,[7] however, that same month Jones resigned from the presidency and the Board of Trustees rejected his resignation and terminated him.[8]

Jones in June 2018 sued the college for wrongful termination and defamation.[9]
