Joseph Maselli (May 30, 1924 – October 18, 2009) was an American-Italian businessman, activist, political advisor, publisher, and pioneer of Italian Culture in the United States. Maselli founded various organizations and research centers throughout the 20th century dedicated to the preservation and documentation of American-Italian heritage in the Southern United States.

Early life

Joseph Maselli was born in Newark, New Jersey, on May 30, 1924, of two Italian immigrant parents. His father, Frank Paul Maselli, migrated from Deliceto, Foggia, Italy, in 1913, and his mother, Mary Assunta Iannetta, arrived from Monte Cassino, Italy, in 1920.[1]

Joseph and his two brothers, Carmen Anthony and Domenick, grew up in Newark and Belleville, surrounded by the Italian culture of their parents. Speaking both Italian and English, Joseph interacted with friends of varying ethnicities and cultures as a child, and quickly learned the importance of diversity and immigration in America.[2]

Joseph’s first endeavors as a businessman occured in elementary school, working as a milk delivery boy in the mornings and in a grocery store after school in the afternoons. After graduating at the top of his class from Belleville High School, Maselli became a part-time bookkeeper, a long-time goal of his, while studying at Rutgers University.[3]

World War II

Maselli’s patriotism was evident throughout his whole life. His parents stressed the importance of Italy’s alliance with the United States in World War I, as some of his family members served in the war and lost their lives at the time.[2] When World War II begun, Maselli enlisted in the Army after a semester at Rutgers. However, a car accident and resulting injury prevented him from serving overseas. He was subsequently stationed at Camp Plauche in New Orleans, Louisiana to recover.[2]

New Orleans

After the war, Maselli remained in New Orleans, working as a bookkeeper once again and studying at Tulane University. After graduating in 1950, Maselli started his first business: a wholesale liquor distributor still active in the New Orleans area today.[3][7]

Italian-American Culture

Maselli founded the Federation of Louisiana, which was later renamed the American-Italian Federation of the Southeast, and served as president of the cultural organization from 1973 to 1982. The organization was the first inter-state organization of Italian Americans in the United States.[3]

In 1973, Maselli founded the Italian American Renaissance Foundation Museum and Research Library, now known as the American-Italian Cultural Center in downtown New Orleans.[2] The center hosts the Piazza d’Italia, an urban plaza constructed in 1978 to commemorate Italian architecture and culture.[2] The center is also home to the Italian-American Digest, a quarterly newspaper described as “the Italian-American Voice of the South,” first created and published by Maselli in 1973.[4]

Maselli founded the American Italian Renaissance Foundation in 1979 and the Louisiana American Italian Sports Hall of Fame to recognize outstanding American Italian figures and athletes in Louisiana.[3]

Maselli served as president of the National Italian-American Coordinating Association, member of the board of directors of the National Italian American Foundation. In such positions, Maselli advised presidents Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, and Ronald Reagan on social issues in the United States.[2]

Recognition

Maselli was widely recognized for his contributions to preserving Italian culture and history. His awards included:

  • Cavaliere Ufficiale. Awarded by Italian government[5]
  • L’Onorificenza Di Commendatore. Awarded by Italian government.[5]
  • Knight in the Sovereign Order of Saint John of Jerusalem.[5]
  • National Italian American of the Year (1977). Awarded by the Greater New Orleans Italian Cultural Society.[5]
  • The Statue of Liberty Ellis Island Medal of Freedom[3]
  • National Conference of Christian and Jews Weiss Award[6]
  • Anti-Defamation League Torch of Liberty Award[6]

Personal life and death

Joseph Maselli married Antoinette Cammarata in 1946.[6] Together they had four children: Joseph Jr., Jan Maria, Michael, and Frank, who now runs the American Italian Cultural Center in New Orleans.[5]

Joseph Maselli died of natural causes on October 18, 2009 at Ochsner Foundation Hospital in New Orleans.[6]
