His efforts led to notable outcomes of discharging more clients in a six-month period than an agency had in several years; increasing an inpatient center’s capacity from 68- to 100-beds; developing and implementing a staff training program for clinicians and nurses of a 1500-bed state hospital; and elevating the overall standard of care for multiple facilities to award them accreditation across professional disciplines. Martinez-Diaz’s success in staff training, implementation, and center/hospital turnaround led him to turn his attention solely to the training of behavior analysts. Contributions to the training of behavior analystsMartinez-Diaz is well-known for establishing the professional licensure and credentialing system for behavior analysts in the state of Florida and nationwide, and developing Florida Institute of Technology's impressive range of behavior analytic graduate and professional development programs.[4] Beginning in 1999, his company ABA Technologies, Inc. and the Florida Institute of Technology partnered to provide high-quality training to pre-service behavior analysts through in-person and online coursework.[5][6][7] Over the span of 20 years, FIT’s offerings have grown to include multiple on-campus professional development,[8] masters,[9] and doctoral programs[10] in Orlando and Melbourne, FL. Personal LifeAs a young boy, not quite eleven years old, Jose A. Martinez-Diaz emigrated from Cuba with his sister during the height of the revolutionary takeover by Fidel Castro. Forced to leave his parents behind (they were later reunited in America), he lived in Miami with relatives. As he left Cuba, he witnessed his neighbors being executed in the streets. Rather than allowing this traumatic uprooting to become a source of resentment, he transformed his experiences into a lifelong commitment to helping vulnerable people. Martinez-Diaz ties his passion for behavior analysis back to a neighbor in Cuba. The “loco,” as other people called him, was a man who was locked in his home because of his problematic behavior. Even as a child, Martinez-Diaz realized this was not a life anyone should have to live and he wished he could help the “loco.” “My mission is to train behavior analysis practitioners and the next generation of behavior analysis faculty and scientists. I want the world to adopt behavior analysis as the best way to solve human problems that involve behavior (and most human problems involve behavior.)
