Juana Raymundo was a young human rights activist who was a member of the Committee of Campesino Development (CODECA) for five years and also a member of the Movement for the Liberation of Peoples. Her occupation was a nurse at the Cotzol Health Center.[1]

Juana was a community leader of Ixil de Nebaj, Quiché, an indigenous community located in the Cuchumatanes mountains of Guatemala.

Activism

Juana and her family joined CODECA in 2013 years ago and were active members of the group. Juana was actively training young girls in the group to participate in political activism.

Death of Juana Raymundo

Juana was found missing on July 27th, 2018 and later found dead by the side of a river on the road by the exit of Nejab. Her body showed visible signs of torture according to Neftalí López, another member of CODECA.

In a statement of retaliation, CODECA demanded the investigation into the cause of her death and stated “those responsible for this murder be investigated and punished. So far, all the murders of our defenders are in impunity.”

According to Fernando Lucero, the local Ministry of the Interior spokesperson, a team of investigators has been sent out to "to assist in the efforts to identify the intellectual and material authors of that deplorable crime."[2]

Hundreds of activists and family attended her funeral. The death of Juana Raymundo was preceded by the murder of six other CODECA community leaders, including Luis Marroquín, Florencio Pérez, Alejandro Hernández and Francisco Munguía, and multiple members of the Peasant Committee of the Altiplano (CCDA), including Mateo Chaman, José Can Xol and Ramón Choc.{{cn}} CODECA is known to be a group antagonistic to the Guatemalan government, and uncertainty around the circumstances of these deaths raises suspicions that these murders might be politically motivated.
