June Beverly Bonesteel (1939- March 2017) was an American aviatrix and author.[1] She started flying airplanes in 1963 when she was 24 and she began instructing in 1967. Later she obtained her helicopter rating and joined the Whirly Girls as #193. All of her flight training was in Phoenix and Scottsdale, AZ. She owned a flight training school in Deer Valley, AZ, instructing in both airplanes and helicopters. Students respectfully nicknamed her “Bonecrusher” due to her unwavering tough instruction. She required students to really understand what she was teaching rather than just memorizing information. She had a plane for her personal use which was a Piper Apache which she cherished until her final day. She flew it to Osh Kosh several times.

June began performing aircraft maintenance in 1974. She earned her A&P certificate with inspection authorization in her early days of owning the flight school so that she could maintain the planes herself. She was the first Phoenix Police Department Helicopter mechanic.

She was a loyal member of the Phoenix 99s from 1979 and ahe attended her last meeting just days before her passing. Ninety-Nines is the international organization of women pilots that promotes advancement of aviation through education, scholarships, and mutual support while honoring women’s unique history and sharing the passion for flight.

In 1981 June became a Designated Pilot Examiner with the FAA.

The FAA awarded June the prestigious U.S. National Flight Instructor of the Year in 1987.
