Kim began his musical career as founding member of Glen Check in 2011.  He has written, produced, recorded, engineered and performed on all of Glen Check’s albums and releases, receiving massive interest from critics and music fans for his talent and unpredictable moves. All of Glen Check’s full-length albums were critically successful, winning Best Dance & Electronic Album (Korean Music Awards) in 2013 and 2014, and touring live shows around the world[1] including large scaled festivals such as Jisan/Ansan Valley Rock Festival (Korea), Summer Sonic Festival (Japan), South By Southwest (US)[2], Clockenflap (Hongkong), Nuits Sonores (France) and many more.

From 2015 Kim started to spread his name independently apart from his band as a solo singer song-writer, producer, DJ, model, mainly based in the underground/subculture scene of Seoul. Despite the propositions from many major TV broadcasting stations and commercial media, Kim has focused on “building a strong foundation” in the underground/subculture scene, inspiring many younger artists across diverse fields.

Career

Glen Check

In mid 2010 Kim and his friends self released an EP called under the band name Glen Check. The EP immediately received positive feedbacks from local independent labels, leading them to sign with Soundholic ran by members of Jaurim. Glen Check was notable for only singing in English and having no barriers in genre, which made them unique in the Seoul underground music scene at the time. They have successfully blended different styles, experimented with sounds and visuals. They looked to Funk, Disco, Synthpop, European indie rock, R&B, Jazz, Techno and many more for their inspiration. Their live setup and visual works attracted many music fans around the world, leading them to perform numerous live shows all around the world.

In 2016 Glen Check left Soundholic and joined a new label named Beasts and Natives Alike (aka BANA) alongside popular rapper Esens, duo XXX.[3]

In early 2019, they left BANA, and announced they’ll be making music independently for the moment.

Solo Project

From 2016 Kim started to collaborate with other artists under his own name. Examples of his collaborations are: “Fakin” with Ximya Kim from XXX, “I Don’t Wanna Love You” with Krystal from F(X)[4], “Don’t Kill Ma Money” with producer Goosebumps and more. In 2018 Kim announced his new solo project “Pretty Boy Blues” a potential album title, which he never gave details in depth. He has mentioned several times through his social network that he will be releasing music he had made in the past under his name soon.

Producer

Apart from making and releasing music as Glen Check or himself, Kim produced for other artists under different aliases. Soundtracks for commercial videos of various brands, fashion show music, rap beats, pop, dance tunes for underground DJs are just to name a few.

DJ

In mid 2015 Kim started to show up in underground clubs as a DJ. According to Kim he started to DJ professionally because he “felt too depressed to stay home 24-7.” He rapidly gained spotlight through DJing in underground clubs like Cakeshop, The Henz Club, Soap, just to name a few. He became well known for crossing and blending genres such as Techno, Disco, Funk, Hip hop and trap[5]. He also joined the underground rave crew “Alter Ego” and is actively contributing in the underground scene.

Personal life

June One Kim was born on February 4, 1991 in a suburb neighborhood of Seoul. He is the first son of father Seog Hwan Kim, and mother Hyun Mi Kim who first met during their studies at Seoul National University. His family and himself left Korea when he was three years old, following his father’s career as a scientist. He spent his childhood internationally, living in Japan, France, and the US. When he came back to his motherland he studied in an international boarding high school in Busan, a southern seaside city in Korea.

Although being raised in a very academic family, Kim was freely exposed to diverse forms of art, mainly music through his father. He grew up listening to many different genres from rock, pop, soul, hip-hop, jazz to electronic. Pink Floyd, Michael Jackson, J Dilla were among his favorites. During high school he played guitar in several punk bands and performed at local underground clubs and gained knowledge about sonic combinations and sound design.

Early Talent

Although his interest was mostly focused on music, it wasn’t until the age of fifteen when he first started recording his own songs. From childhood he had great passion in drawing, fashion, was obsessed with typography and book cover designs. In high school, he showed noticeable talent in English writing, enjoyed participating in many model United Nation events and global youth leadership conferences, where he collected ideas to make his own model organization. Inspired from the 2008 RAMSAR convention in Korea, and being financially supported by the United Nations branch organizations, Kim officially hosted a model version of RAMSAR for high school students across the country[6]. The event was successful and for the very first time in his life, Kim was broadcasted on national TV news as the chairman and founder of the project.[7] His plan was to apply for university with the experiences and achievements he had earned, however decided to attend an art & design school to accomplish his dreams in the creative field. Yet after one year of studying, Kim decided to quit the study due to his “lack of confidence” and depression. It was around this time he started making music seriously and planned to form a band.
