As Senior Pastor of the Park Avenue Christian Church in Manhattan, also known as “The Park”, Pastor Kaji Douša is the first woman called to this role and is the second African American to serve as Senior Pastor [2]

Education and Family

Born August 22, 1978, in Washington D.C., Kaji is the younger daughter civil rights activists Karen and A.B. Spellman. Her parents, met through their work with the Student Nonviolent Coordinating CommitteeHer grandfather Edwin R. (Doc) Edmonds, a prominent UCC leader in the Civil Rights movement who stood with the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as he delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech at the Lincoln Memorial and worked with him in the formation of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference [3]. Her sister, Toyin Spellman Diaz, is a founding member and oboist of Grammy-nominated Imani Winds quintet. Malcolm’s credits include co-executive producer for Fox’s hit series Empire. Nichelle’s credits include creator of Reese Witherspoon’s production company Hello Sunshine’s Are You Sleeping and producer for CBS’s hit The Good Wife.

Reverend Kaji grew up in Washington D.C. where she attended the Holton-Arms School in Bethesda, MD where she attended Holton-Arms School in Bethesda, MD. She is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and of Yale University, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree cum laude and a Master of Divinity degree. At Yale, Kaji concentrated on liturgical arts while enrolled at the Institute of Sacred Music.

Before entering the ministry, Reverend Kaji developed new products for a large financial services company on Wall Street. She also has a political background, having co-managed and staffed several successful campaigns including her aunt, Rep. Toni Edmonds Walker’s first campaign for the Connecticut General Assembly.

Kaji served as Senior Minister of “The Table”, United Church of Christ La Mesa just outside of San Diego, CA. She served Plymouth Church in Minneapolis as a sabbatical minister. Additionally, she has served Saint Peter’s Lutheran Church in New York City, was a pastoral resident at the Village Church in Wellesley, Massachusetts, and acting associate pastor at the First Congregational Church of Darien. She was a chapel minister at Yale Divinity School’s Marquand Chapel. Kaji is married to software engineer Patrik Douša. They have one child.

Activism

In 2010-11 and again in 2016 Pastor Kaji has served as the co-chair of New Sanctuary Cities NY along with Ravi Ragbir [4] and has actively protested the detainment of immigrants including that of her co-chair[5] A staunch supporter of Women's Rights and the MeToo Movement [6] she stood in solidarity with fellow Holton-Arms School graduate Christine Blasey Ford. On October 2018, Pastor Kaji spoke at the Women’s March during the Anti- Kavanaugh Protests, on the steps of the Supreme Court of the United States and her related sermon was featured in the Washington Post [7] Pastor Kaji protested at Standing Rock with the Reverend Laurie Pound Feille and the Rev. Dan Adolphson from the First Christian Church in 2016. [8]
