She founded Karen’s Gourmet Kitchen, the first company in India to produce gourmet food products. She is known for influencing the way people eat and perceive food for the last 30 years in India. She is also the co-founder of Farmers Markets[1] by Karen Anand – a wholefood market event which takes place in 8 cities in India. She has written several books and hosted three TV shows, The Good Food Guide for Star TV (1994), Cook na Kaho on Star One and Eating out on Trendmill for CNBC (1996). She is a restaurant consultant with several successful restaurant projects globally, including the award winning Bombay café in London ‘Dishoom[2]’ EARLY LIFE AND EDUCATIONKaren Anand was born on May 23rd 1960, in Bombay (now Mumbai) to Patrick and Ophelia Fernandes. At the age of 6, her family moved to London. At 18, she moved to France for a year, studying French and initiating her culinary education. She trained briefly in Lucas Carton, the 3 star Michelin restaurant in Paris. She completed her degree in International Relations and French at Sussex University in 1983. Russian is her third language. She met and married the film producer Gul Anand in 1984 and travelled extensively throughout the world, trying, tasting and bringing back recipes to Bombay. Gul Anand passed away in Nov 1996. CAREERShe was invited to open a weekend Salad Bar at Hotel Regency in Pune (1988), followed by the Salad Bar in Malabar Hills, Mumbai 1989. These were the first Mediterranean style standalone restaurants in these cities. In 1991 she opened the pioneering Cheese Bazaar gourmet store. In 1994, she began a career in food consultancy; opening the Habitat Centre in Delhi; Khyber in Bombay; conceptualizing Afraa (award winning European style fine dining restaurant); and Citrus in Chennai. She then created Zune, an Indian restaurant for the Hilton Delhi, and also her own European restaurant in Pune called Merlot. Her most recent involvement is with the boutique hotel, Svatma in South India. In 1995, she met Yadu Sankalia, owner, Contemporary Arts and Crafts, the lifestyle store in Mumbai. Together they started Karen’s Gourmet Kitchen with a small gourmet store and deli, followed by two franchises in Mumbai. In 1999, they got married. They then expanded the range of jams and marmalades, to sauces and dressings, and then started supplying luxury hotels. CONSULTANCIESKaren consults with many large Indian and International companies operating within India, helping them to develop strategies, recipes and events for the Indian market. These included companies like Marico for olive oil, Britannia for cheese, VenetaCucina kitchens, Jet Airways inflight menus, Pepsico for new drink development, Dominos Pizza for twisty bread, herb mix for sachets and vegetarian toppings. She developed snacks for Kelloggs, curated events for Carlsberg, Philips food processors, Hafele kitchens, Fosters and HLL. She helped set up the experience centre in Delhi for Miele kitchens, She developed a range of conserves for ITC foods. Karen developed the Indian recipes for Suhana, a range of Indian spices in the UK that won the Great Tasting Award UK 2010. She worked with Sopexa, the external food and beverage wing of the French Minstry of Foreign affairs promoting French food in India. She conducted Master classes at the award winning Spa and Health Resort, Ananda in the Himalayas. She was a founding member on the Wine Board of India (IGPB) which was set up to help Indian wine producers expand to domestic and international markets[3]. WRITINGHer first book was Penguin Food Lovers’ Guide[4] to India and Nepal, coauthored with Gul Anand in 1993, then Good Food Good Living[5], a lighter look at Indian food (HarperCollins); followed by Simple Cooking, a series of 12 easy to cook books designed for everyone from the desperate housewife to the student. International Cooking and Simple Cooking for Smart Men[6], both to accompany her TV series. She also authored a coffee table book, The Chefs Table to celebrate 60 years of the Hyatt in India. She has written columns in the Indian Express, the Independent, Bombay Times and Pune Times[7] for 10 years. She wrote and curated the annual Times Food Guide for the Times of India Pune, which culminated in the Times Food Awards, an annual event. Her articles over the years have also appeared in the Deccan Chronicle[8], Condé Nast Traveller[9], Hindustan Times[10], Maharashtra Herald, Sunday Observer, Robb Report, Mint and The Telegraph[11] and for magazines Verve, Harpers’ Bazaar, Travel and Leisure, Taste and Travel, Lonely Planet, Good Housekeeping, Man’s World, Femina, a monthly column in BBC Good Food, Good Homes and Jet Wings. She was the first food editor for Elle Magazine India. She still writes regular columns in Hindustan Times online, Sunday Telegraph, The Hindu and the inflight magazine Jet Wings. She also authored a CD ROM with a compilation of easy recipes called Creative Cooking for the City Couple by Times Multimedia. FARMERS’ MARKET by KAREN ANAND (2012 to present) In 2012, she and Yadu Sankalia started the Pune Farmers’ Market [19] in their hometown Pune. This expanded to 8 cities across India. The markets today house a collection of small producers and are places where people can sample and purchase in a friendly, fun and safe environment.
