释义 | God Kathavarayan is the male warrior God of the Vanniyar Kula Kshatriya Padayachi Kounder a warrior clan of Hindus of South India, especially in the state of Tamil Nadu. There are many Temples for God Kathavarayan all over the state, while it should be confused with the other warrior Gods Karuppasamy and Ayyanarappan. One such temple is in Muthampatty located in Banapuram village, Mettur Taluk, Salem District. Built by people of the caste Vanniyar Kula Kshatriya Padayachi Kounder, it has wide-spread following with people traveling from more than hundreds of kilometres to pray here. It is one of the two Kula Deivam Temples of this warrior-turned- farmer clan. This temple complex also houses the God Ganesha, Godesses Kamatchi and Meenatchi, Karuppasamy and his band of brothers, Ayyanarappan Swamy and his brothers, Radappan Swamy, and whole host of terracotta elephants, cows, horses and even dogs. Cockerels and goats are sacrificed as thanksgiving when devotees’ boons are granted by the God Kathavarayan. During this time, the gates of the Goddesses Kamatchi and Meenatchi are closed since they are vegetarian. The meat is then cleaned, cooked and served to relatives and visitors in the adjoining kitchen and meals room, while some parts of it are taken back home to cook later. The women folk also prepare the Pongal (normal boiled rice and not the special dish called Pongal served in popular restaurants), right inside the temple complex on a stove made of three stones and firewood. Pongal prepared this is offered to the Gods along with coconuts, bananas, betel leaves and arecanuts. Another important aspect of rituals is the offering of liquor to God Kathavarayan by pouring a little on the floor and lighting a camphor tablet on the poured liquor. Originally Arrack the locally produced firewater was used for the offering and with arrack production banned in the state, devotees offer all sorts of liquor including but not restricted to whiskey, rum, and brandy. As it burns the devotees pray to God Kathavarayan thanking him for his blessings. A band of local men are seen at most times around the place of offering and they take away the remaining liquor in the bottle to share among themselves. Typically those who make the offering do not drink it themselves. Compared to the other Gods who have their Temples facing the east, the Temples of Kathavarayan are facing the West. As with most village deities in Tamil Nadu, the priests are hereditary and not from the Brahmin caste. Every twelve years, a huge and elaborate festival called the Devam is conducted to renew the power of the temple. Fridays are the most auspicious days to visit and pray here at the temple. But the local villagers are happy to help in opening the temple on most other days if any special offering needs to be made by visitors.
