Education

In 1972 Kathleen Irwin earned her Bachelor of Arts from Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario.[1] Irwin also earned a Design Diploma from the National Theatre School of Canada in 1979, a Masters in European Scenography from the (Central Saint Martins College of Art in London, UK, DAMU Design Institute in Prague Germany, 1995) and a Doctor of Arts from the Aalto University in Helsinki, Finland in 2007.[1]

Career

Irwin is currently working as the Associate Dean of Graduate & Research for the Faculty of Media, Art and Performance at the University of Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada.[1] She is also an Associate Professor and the Department Head for the Theatre Department within the Faculty for Media, Art and Performance at the University of Regina.[1] Prior to her current position, Irwin was a sessional lecturer at the university of Ottawa for 10 years and was a freelance theatre designer for 15 years.[1][2] During her 15-year career as a freelance theatre designer, Irwin produced over 150 professional shows for theatre, opera, dance, film and video.[1][2] During the beginning of her career at the University of Regina Irwin also formed her own theatre company Knowhere Production Inc.[3][1][4] From 2002-2015 Knowhere Productions produced large-scale, site-specific performances and installations in collaboration with members of the company.[1] Throughout her career, Irwin has been involved in many international conferences in Helsinki, Belgrade, Tallin, Utrecht, Munich, Prague, Istanbul and Melbourne.[1] Her involvement includes working as the Canadian representative on the Education Commission and as co-chair of the Research Commission in partnership with OISTAT to present at and help organize Scenofest workshops for the Prague Quadrennial of Space and Performance in 1999, 2004, 2007 and 2011.[5][6] In 2011 and 2012, Irwin continued teaching in Europe at the Summer Academy for Artistic Research at Aalto University. The Summer Academy is a doctoral level program for artist researchers in Finland.[1][7] Throughout her career Irwin has been a member of many Canadian boards for theatre and research.[8] In the past she has served on the board of the National Theatre School Alumni, the board of [https://www.designers.ca/ Associated Designers of Canada] and is currently serving on the board of the Canadian Association of Theatre Research as Scholarly Awards Co-ordinator.[1]
