Life and career

Keli'i Akina founded the Center for Tomorrow's Leaders and Pacific Century Fellows. He has served on the national board of directors for the Youth for Christ USA, where he was president and CEO from 1980 to 2011. He has also served on the board of directors for the Aloha Heritage Center in Maui.

In 2013, Akina became the president and CEO of the Grassroot Institute of Hawaii, a free market think tank. He was elected as a trustee-at-large for the state Office of Hawaiian Affairs in 2016, a position he will hold until 2020.

Election to Office of Hawaiian Affairs

In 2014, Akina ran for the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, a Hawaii state public office that manages a portion of ceded lands allotted to Hawaiian Homelands, advances the lifestyle of Native Hawaiians, preserve Hawaiian culture and protect Native Hawaiian rights. Though non-Native Hawaiians felt they should not vote for Office of Hawaiian Affairs positions after the Rice v. Cayetano U.S. Supreme Court verdict, Akina encouraged them to vote. His campaign slogan, "OHA for everyone," was meant to reflect the position that everyone gets a say in what happens at OHA. He lost with a little over 92,000 votes.[4]

In 2016, Akina ran for the position again, using the same campaign slogan he used in 2014: "OHA for everyone." He advanced to the general election after garnering 32,115 votes in the primary election. He won the general election with 163,743 votes, beating out incumbent Haunani Apoliona, who held the seat for 20 years.[5][6]
