Kendra McKinley (born December 17, 1990) is an American musician, composer and performance artist. McKinley's career began in 2009 in the clubs and performance spaces of Santa Cruz, California, rising later to headliner status in San Francisco.[1][2] Formally trained, McKinley is known as a strong stylist and capable bandleader, with a chamber-pop/world-pop approach to reinterpreting classic American song genres.[3] According to an early career review in The Bold Italic she possesses "strong, undulating vocals, somewhat reminiscent of St. Vincent."[4]. One review of her 2016 album Treat noted the rarity of hearing an artist who "slaps you out of your self-absorbed, intractable, and painfully narrow opinions about what defines life and art." [5]

McKinley was born and raised in Aptos, California, and graduated from the University of California, Santa Cruz.

Along with former Sigur Rós keyboardist Kjartan Sveinsson she was chosen to arrange and perform a suite of songs in Icelandic performance artist Ragnar Kjartansson's three-day durational art concert Romantic Songs of the Patriarchy, set to be performed at the Women's Building in San Francisco, in late 2018.[6][7]
