词条 Draft:K Hemlata
释义

In the history of India’s trade unions, never has a woman become the leader at the centre till Dr K Hemalata was elected as the national president of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) at its 15th national conference held at Puri in Odisha. Hemalata has been on forefront of the fights taken up by CITU since 1970s. The CITU has about 5,000 trade unions across the country with a total of over 60 lakh members.

Born in Andhra Pradesh, Dr Hemalata had her student life in Brahampur in Odisha where she studied medicine at the MKCG Medical College and later quit the job to join the trade union.

Dr. Hemlata is now leading the national-level efforts to organize the unorganized workers and to give them voice and representation. Her contributions are decisive in bringing up the issues faced by the marginalised Anganwadi workers and helpers to the mainstream political discourse. The CITU's efforts to fight for the rights of organized and unorganized workers, in particular - Anganwadi, ICDS, Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan workers and Shiksha Sevakas and equal pay for work of equal value, including for daily wage earners, contractual workers and ad-hoc employees, continues under the leadership of Dr. Hemlata.
