The earlier name of Kokborok was also Tipra. Tipra Language had a script early in 12th century known as Koloma but was replaced by Bengali script, and slowly the script became extinct. The name still lives on in the mindset of the Tipra speaking people. Khorongma script was made due to the urgency in the need for Tipra own script. In the last few decades the demand for having Tipra's own script grew, because Tipra has been using the Bengali script, and the Latin script since 19th century. Khorongma is an abugida but it is not like a Brahmic script. It has 28 characters and is written in its unique form. There are two sets of characters. 1)Nangplai - This includes all the vowels and mostly used characters, as per its name Nang means need and Plai means everytime in Kokborok, meaning Need everytime to write a word 2)Nangprai - This includes only consonants, as per its name Namg means need and Prai means little little in Kokborok, meaning Need a very few times. HistoryThe name Khorongma came from an old capital city of Twipra kingdom, known as Khorongma or Kholongma.
