Rosalynn McGinnis first met her captor, Henri Piette, in 1995, when he moved down the street from her family with his 3 children. Her father owned a construction business, and her mother, Gayla Joan, worked as a secretary. Rosalynn and her siblings would play at the park with Piette's children. McGinnis' parents seperated, and her mother quickly developed a romantic relationship with Piette, and he began to sleep over at her home. Piette began to molest Rosalynn, and things continually got worse, when Piette started beating her mother. Piette married 11 year-old McGinnis, and also married her mother the next day. Piette told her that it was so their family could stay together. The beatings and rapes got worse for McGinnis as she was stabbed, choked, and shot by Piette. Her mother left with her children to stay in a battered women's shelter. KidnappingPrior to the day the abduction took place, Henri Piette approached Rosalynn McGinnis on the playground of her school, and told her he was going to get her mother, her brothers, and her to "come home so they could be a family". On June 13, 1997, Rosalynn was paged over the intercom at school to come to the office. When she got to the office, she saw a hat and a poncho that she identified as belonging to Henri Piette. Afraid, she tried to runaway from school, but saw Petitte's son, Tobi, sitting in Piette' truck, and he convinced her to get in the car, and they proceeded to drive to a motel. At the motel, Piette told McGinnis that she'll never be allowed to leave because she committed a crime by running away, and that she would get locked up in jail or a "nut house". When McGinnis was 12, she became pregnant, but miscarried. Eventually, they go back to the same place in Mexico where they had vacationed. Piette made McGinnis and children pan handle on the streets of Mexico, because they ran out of money due to Pettite's expensive drugs and alcohol habit. During her ordeal, Pettite refused to get medical treatment for McGinnis, even during the births of their 9 children together. McGinnis attempted to runaway several times, but was caught and she was subjected to brutal consequences. One day, McGinnis stood up to Piette, telling him to never put his hands on her kids, and he punched her in the throat. During the attack Piette tried to strangle McGinnis so hard, he damaged her throat so badly that he had to take her to the emergency room. The violence caused her voice to be irreparably damaged. On another occasion, he shot her, and bullets were left in her head and back. Piette wanted to make sure that the searches for McGinnis stopped, so when she turned 18, he took her to Phoenix and parked a few blocks from the police station, and sent McGinnis in to have her name taken off of the missing kids list, telling her to lie about being a runaway from drug addicted parents. Her 3 children were forced to stay in the car with Piette, as collateral to ensure McGinnis would come back.[1] References1. ^{{cite web |url=https://people.com/crime/why-rosalynn-mcginnis-took-name-off-missing-persons-registry/amp/ |title=Held Captive 19 Years: Rosalynn McGinnis Claims She Was Forced to Take Herself Off Missing-Persons Registry by Alleged Abductor |date=August 31, 2017 |accessdate=May 29, 2018}} External Links |
