释义 | Knight Jan Johan Kersberch was born in 1334, to Lord Gheerard van Vianen, van Vorne, van Zeelandt, and Lady Stephanie van Zuylen. Jan Johan married Elisabeth, Lysbeth. (unknown last name) Jan passed away in 1392, at age 58. Vassal of the Bischop of Utrecht. [https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kersbergen The castle of Kersbergen, Carsbergen] was built in the 2nd half of the 14th Century. It is highly likely that due to the name given to it, it was built by Knight Jan Johan Kersberch, on land likely given on loan from the Bischop of Utrecht who's vassal he was. Jan Johan had taken the new name Kersberch as he was the bastard son of Gheerard (Gerard) van Voorne, van Vianen and Stephanie van Zuylen. Stephanie was older per some records. We have to keep in mind that the birth dates of most nobility is always in question, due to a high infant death rate, but the date of death is usually correct. His parents (Gherard and Stephanie) never married, and his father Gherard married another noble lady at some point and had several children with her. As there are no further records of his mother Stephanie, it is, likely that Stephanie van Zuylen though from a noble family was committed to a cloister after the birth of her son and Knight Jan Johan was raised by his father's new family. Since only one child is found out of the marriage between Knight Jan Johan and Lysbeth, and no further records of Lysbeth, several situations could have come to pass. 1) Lord Jan Johan was gone serving the Bishop of Utrecht who's vassal he was. 2) He was highly likely married to her by his father's command, Gerard van Voorne van Vianen and simply was not interested in the marriage. But in 1385 Elisabeth per the archival records is still alive. Theodrada) Knight Jan Johan Kersberch's Work: As a vassal to the Bischop another important duty of a vassal was to attend to his feudal lord during court. He was also responsible for recruiting more men for his lord's army, protecting and managing his lord's manor, supervising all of the serfs and peasants who lived on the manor, and acting as a mercenary for his lord. Jan van Arkel (?, 1314 - Luik, 1 juli 1378) was bisschop van Utrecht van 1342 tot 1364 en bisschop van Luik van 1364 tot 1378 when he died. It is highly likely Knight Jan Johan was his vassal and therefor led an interesting but extremely busy life traveling with the Bischop and fighting for the Bischop. Bishop Jan van Arkel was often confused by authors. Jan IV was the son of Jan III van Arkel from his first marriage with Mabelia van Arkel thus the half brother of bishop Jan. Jan V van Arkel is the grandson of Jan III van Arkel, through his son Otto van Arkel. Bishop Jan van Arkel has never been mentioned with a number behind his name i.e.: v, vi etc.) . But it is clear that they are related through Mabelia van Voorne. John of Arkel or Jan van Arkel (1314 – 1 July 1378 in Liège) was a Bishop of Utrecht from 1342 to 1364 and Prince-Bishop of Liège from 1364 to 1378. Bischop Jan retreated to Grenoble, but in 1351 he returned and in the following years managed to regain his position and restore his authority in the diocese. He once again stood up against tricky castle lords and robber knights, where various strategically located castles came into Utrecht ownership. Within the city, stability was created by the exile of the Dutch Nationalist party of the Gunterlingen. After a final campaign against Holland in 1355-1356, peace was provisionally signed: the Nedersticht had come under the curatorship of the Count and the robber knights had been defeated. This was 8 kilometres from Carsbergen Castle in Zeist, province of Utrecht. That is a 2-hour walk or on horseback. It is likely Knight Jan Johan was away from home for weeks, months and years in order to serve the Bishop. It is also likely that out of loyalty Jan Johan went to Grenoble and Liege (Luik Belgium) with the Bischop until the Bishop's death in 1378 at Liege, and then returned to Holland. |
