Koulal (Sanskrit : Koulal or Kulal meaning potters’ wheel) is a West Bengal based bi-annual Bengali journal dedicated to publishing research-oriented inquisitive works on culture, religion, literature, history and anthropology of undivided Bengal. It has continuously been published since 2011 while it’s web edition was launched in 2018[1]. Koulal can trace it’s roots to the intellectual efforts and endeavours of this sort pioneered by stalwarts like Dr Amalendu Mitra, author of Rarher Sanskriti O Dharmathakur(রাঢ়ের সংস্কৃতি ও ধর্মঠাকুর) and Suniti Kumar Chatterji who were amongst the earliest of Bengali Hindu intelligentsia to draw attention to the rich hues of historical tapestry of ancient and medieval Bengal which have become shrouded by the sands of time over the ages[2]. In a way this magazine revived the intellectual exercises along these lines and is contributing ceaselessly to the growing body of intellectual and historiographic insights into the obscure matters of Bengali culture’s historical sources & their extant remnants and still surviving popular and folk arts[3], religious festivals that are inextricably interwoven with the strands of Bengal’s timeless religious beliefs and cultural practices, traditions and local customs each of which have their own unique stories to narrate. Besides these Koulal has also been a platform for advocating efforts at archaeological surveying of unexplored sites of significant antiquity in Bengal which are simply overlooked and lay in limbo awaiting an unknown fate. EstablishmentKoulal was first established in 2011 by it’s founding editor Dr Swapan Kumar Thakur[4] of Katwa who still remains the helmsman of this noble initiative. Every edition of this journal has unfailingly provided new insights into Bengal’s rich history and it’s multi-layered past which is chock full of historical, cultural and religious treasures that never fail to surprise even the most modern and globalized readers of the present era. EditionsThe latest edition of Koulal published in featured articles concerning the age-old folk traditions of Bengal like Raaybneshe Naach[5] , a folk dance form still practised in the remote corners of Murshidabad and Birbhum – the place where it gained the fame and patronage which the dance form enjoys till date. Besides that this edition also brings forth articles written from the vantage point of certain families of old nobility that shed light on worship of Kartikeya[6] which, though not very extensively practised in Bengal, is especially pertinent to understand the culture of Bengali Smarta Hindus in entirety who are usually known to have worshiped five deities as opposed to their South Indian Smarta counterparts who include Kartikeya as an inseparable part of their divine pantheon. It also features an article on the present day descendant of the Nawabs of Murshidabad[7] and their unique traditional customs surrounding the launching of boats in the river Ganges and the socio-cultural roots of these traditional practices. Cultural PositionsKoulal since it’s very inception has maintained an objective viewpoint in survey and analysis of the subjects that it treats of while retaining a typically Indian and not essentially a western Orientalist perspective. |
