KP George

KP George is an American politician from the state of Texas. He is the top elected official in Fort Bend County as the County Judge for Fort Bend, Texas.[1].

Biography

KP was born in a tiny village in Kerala [2] in southern India. KP's father was a truck driver who earned little money, but enough to provide an education for KP and his six siblings. KP grew up poor having to walk to school barefoot and studying by the light of kerosene lamps in a thatch-straw hut. After receiving excellent grades in school, KP was admitted to the state university in Kerala were he earned a Bachelor of Science. KP came to the United States in 1993 on a visa to work for a financial firm. After working for the financial firm for a number of year KP continued to pursue his American Dream by opening his own financial planning business.

KP and his wife, Sheeba, moved to Sugar Land [3] in 1999 to raise their three children. KP was always involved in his community in Fort Bend, as a member of Indo-American groups, the Sugar Land Rotary Club, the Fort Bend Chamber of Commerce, and numerous education advocacy groups[4]. KP also focused his efforts on establishing the Hightower High School Academies' Booster Club and went on to be the president of the booster club. After his success in working with Hightower High School, KP went on to defeat the incumbent in 2014 for the Fort Bend ISD Board of Trustees Position 5[5]. While on the Board of Trustees, KP advocated for increased vocational training for students and equal access to education for all students. After serving his first three-year term, he won his reelection by a significantly larger margin in 2017.

Disheartened by the weak recovery and poor emergency preparedness during Hurricane Harvey[6], KP decided to run for County Judge in 2018. In the general election KP challenged the 15-year incumbent County Judge Robert “Bob” Hebert. KP defeated the Judge Hebert with 132,298 votes to Hebert’s 117,747 votes[7]. Mr. George’s victory was part of the sweep by County-wide Democrats in Fort Bend and also marked a historic point in Texas history with KP being the first County Judge of Asian descent[8]. Mr. George has noted that his victory is a reflection of the diversity of Fort Bend County, the most diverse in the country[9]
