Kurtis Evan Smejkal (born June 11th, 1988), is a Canadian podcaster. film critic, and internet personality. Smejkal first gained attention with his video games news website, The Motherboard, which was sold in 2011. He later founded the Three Angry Nerds network, a pop culture podcast network launched in 2013.

Smejkal is known for his appreciation of horror movies, pop culture references, Superhero and Comic Book knowledge, and for his unabashed thoughts on film. Since launching Three Angry Nerds in 2013, Smejkal has launched eight shows on the network since, while also producing countless others.

Life and career

Early life

Kurtis Evan Smejkal was born on June 11th, 1988, to Bob Smejkal and Michele Belanger in New Westminster, British Columbia. his parents divorced when he was 6. He attended Philip Sheffield Elementary School and later Yale Secondary School in Abbotsford, British Columbia. In 2008, he completed an Associate's Degree at the University Of The Fraser Valley. He later completed his Bachelor of Arts and his Master of Arts at Simon Fraser University in 2011 and 2013 respectively. As a child, Smejkal often read reviews for films in TV Guide magazine's, often citing these as his inspiration for wanting to pursue a career in film criticism.

While attending the University Of The Fraser Valley, Smejkal wrote weekly video game reviews for the school paper, The Cascade[1]. He often cites these reviews as being the avenue for him to refine his voice as a critic.

Smejkal launched The Motherboard as a means to cover video game news and provide reviews along with weekly columns. He launched a podcast to compliment the written articles alongside co-founder Boris Tang. Smejkal often cites this podcast as being what taught him the value of podcasting and the effect it can have over an audience.

Three Angry Nerds

Smejkal noticed that many similar pop culture podcasts focused on sharing pop culture knowledge while also being largely pretentious.

Three Angry Nerds was founded by Smejkal along with Alex 'Lozzy' Lorusso and Lucas Charleston

In 2014, Smejkal conceived of the idea of the Nerds In Love podcast, a relationship advice podcast alongside with Back In Time, a pop culture topic show covering the years of pop culture from the 1970's to modern times. Back In Time was cancelled in 2015. Nerds In Love continues to be produced, with Dr. Stephanie Moulton Sarkis PhD joining the podcast in 2017.

In 2016, Smejkal launched Three Angry Gamers, a video game news and reviews podcast as well as First Friday. A Friday The 13th podcast where he and co-host Karyn Halpin covered Friday The 13th. Three Angry Gamers continues to be produced; with First Friday on hiatus. Smejkal has indicated that he would like to see the show return in the future.

2017 marked the launch of the Three Angry Nerds network. Smejkal remarks that the network is intended to give podcasters a platform to see their shows succeed. The network launched with Goodbye Mello Brick Road, an irreverent Top 5 podcast hosted by Three Angry Nerds co-host, Dave Mello. Netflix And Review was also launched which focuses on bad movies on Netflix. The same year, Smejkal launched Tremble, the horror movie podcast.

On podcasting, Smejkal has said, "Since I started podcasting, I’ve always been a proponent of working together with other podcasters, this was a bit less acceptable but now we have great initiatives like TryPod and PodernFamily, but I tell people if you want to succeed in podcasting, you need to work together."[2]
