}}Kyle Kempt (born November 14, 1994)[1] is a college American football quarterback for the Iowa State Cyclones. Previously, before Iowa State, Kempt played for the Oregon State Beavers football team and Hutchinson Blue Dragons football team. [2] Kempt was awarded the Second Team Academic All-Big 12 award,[3] as well as being on the CFPA National Performer of the Year Watch List. [4]

High school career

Kempt played both football and baseball at Massillon Washington High School, located in Massillon, Ohio. He was a starting quarterback by the time he was a sophomore. Kempt became the school's all time leading passer.[5] Some of his honors and awards in high school include the 2013 North/South Ohio All Star Classic MVP, as well as being awarded with the second team all-state quarterback by the Associated Press. By the time Kempt was a senior, he threw for 3,056 yards as a senior, with 32 touchdowns and just 10 interceptions. [6]

Recruitment

Kempt was heavily recruited out of high school, receiving offers from Oregon State Beavers, UConn, Indiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, Toledo, Cincinnati, and West Virginia. At first, Kempt committed to Cincinnati. When the head coach there, Butch Jones, left Cincinnati to coach the Tennessee team, Kempt lost his scholarship. On January 26, 2013, Kempt committed to Oregon State University.[7]

College career

2013 season

After arriving at Oregon State, Kempt redshirted his initial college season.

2014 season

Kempt was a squad member with the Beavers. He did not make any plays. At the end of the season, he was run off and lost his scholarship at Oregon State.[8]

2015 season

After Kempt left Oregon State, he went on to play at Hutchinson Community College, in Kansas. He didn't play there either. By the end of the season, Kempt was looking to transfer to a 4 year university elsewhere.[9]

2016 season

Kempt contacted Matt Campbell, the former head coach at Toledo. When Campbell was named the head coach at Iowa State for the 2016 season, Kempt decided to walk on. He was placed on the scout team. He appeared in 1 game, passed for 15 yards and made one rush for 7 yards.

He was named Offensive Scout Team Player of the Year.[10]

2017 season

On October 3, 2017, the starting quarterback for Iowa State, Jacob Park, announced he was taking a leave from the football team to work through 'personal issues.'[11] Kempt was named the starting quarterback for the game against #3 Oklahoma. He rushed for 343 yards, completing 18 out of 24 passes, and scored 3 touchdowns with zero interceptions. He led Iowa State to win, 38-31, [12] as well as leading the team to win games against Kansas, Texas Tech, and an upset win against #4 TCU. [13] In the middle of the game against Oklahoma State, he suffered a shoulder injury. [14] He recovered and played for the 2017 Liberty Bowl against #20 Memphis. He completed 24 out of 38 passes, leading Iowa State to a 21-20 win. [15] He finished the season with a 66.3% completion rate, the best in Iowa State football history. [16]

2018 season

There was uncertainty that Kempt would get a 6th year of eligibility. Kempt was testing the "run off" rule in the NCAA, which allows players another year if being run off from another 4 year institution. Previously, Kempt was run-off by Oregon State after the end of the 2014 season. After the 2017 season, the NCAA granted him another year.[17] The starting quarterback from the beginning of the season, Jacob Park, decided to transfer from Iowa State, making Kempt the new starting quarterback.
