HistoryFounding of the Mu ChapterChrist said in Matthew 5:14 (ESV), "You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden." Lambda Sigma Phi's founders saw a need to create a city on a hill within the Greek life on college campuses, staying true to Christ's words in John 17 that Christians are to be in the world, but that we are not of the world. That is what our nine founding brothers had in mind on August 9th, 2000 when the Mu Chapter was chartered at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa.[2] The Mu Chapter, designated so because it is the mother Chapter for Lambda Sigma Phi, came into being through the work of several Christian brothers desiring to create a "city on a hill" (Matthew 5:14) within the Greek life community at the University of Alabama (UA). Discussions originally began in the summer of 1999 on a summer beach trip when Morgan Plott, Jonathan Whitehurst, Will Wiggins, Blake Johnson, and Mrs. Plott (Morgan's mother) all began to talk about what opportunities there were on campus at UA for Christian men. In the fall of that year, this same group reached out to UA on securing an on-campus fraternity house on New Fraternity Row which had just become available. They continued working with campus administration throughout the 1999-2000 school year, and by August of 2000 they had secured the house on campus and chartered the Mu Chapter with the following founding members: Anthony Fontaine, Gabe Giardina, Phillip Lee, Buddy Overstreet, Morgan Plott, John Stuart Rabon, Chip Riley, Jonathan Whitehurst, and Nathan Vaughn. Lambda Sigma Phi's Mu Chapter was the first new fraternity on UA's campus in 100 years, it was the first and only Christian fraternity on UA's campus, and it was the first traditionally white fraternity to actively recruit and initiate a minority brother. Since 2000, the Mu Chapter has continued its focus to make disciples of Christ through intentional discipleship, active engagement within UA's Greek life, and community involvement.[2] Founding Fathers
Founding of the Alpha ChapterThe Alpha Chapter of Lambda Sigma Phi of the University of North Alabama was chartered April 23rd, 2017 in the house of the Mu Chapter on the campus of the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. However, the origin of the Alpha Chapter dates back even farther.[3] In the fall of 2015, five men at the University of North Alabama gathered together to explore the potential of founding a chapter of a distinctively Christian fraternity at the university. After attempts at starting a chapter fell through due to the National organization not being interested in smaller universities, the group of men continue to pursue on now being at fourteen men as a colony. Despite troubles, the men were determined to not lose hope, and establish a Christ-centered fraternity at the University of North Alabama. They believed God had called them to establish a brotherhood on their campus, and that the Lord would provide a way.[3] Over the Christmas break, the men deliberated on whether to form an original fraternity, or to establish a chapter of another Christian fraternity already in existence. After one of the men researched over the break, he came to an article from USA Today referring to the Mu Chapter of Lambda Sigma Phi. In early January 2017, the colony of Christian men then reached out to the Mu chapterto see if Lambda Sigma Phi would like to expand to North Alabama. The men decided collectively to pursue founding the first expansion chapter of Lambda Sigma Phi, later to be known as the Alpha Chapter. They elected an Executive Board that mirrored the board of the Brothers at Mu. The founding Executive Board consisted on the following men: President Samuel Mashburn, Vice President of External Affairs Chase Holcombe, Vice President of Internal Affairs Seth Callahan, Vice President of Judicial Affairs Michael Thompson, Secretary Sean Gillman, Treasurer Christopher Drensek, and Chaplain Jacob Bradley. Since founding, the brotherhood has joined the Interfraternity Council of the University of North Alabama.[3] Continuing GrowthStriving to spread a light within Greek Life and to multiply disciples, Lambda Sigma Phi has begun pushing for growth in the past few years and is looking to start new chapters across the United States. To look further into the topic, refer to the website.[2] PurposeVision StatementTo make disciples of Christian men by putting them into a group that will enhance their spiritual lives through accountability, small group Bible study and fellowship, and to better equip the brothers to reach the University to reach the world, for Christ.[2] TraditionsOfficial ColorsLambda Sigma Phi’s official common colors are royal blue and black; whereas the formal heraldry colors are navy blue, red, and gold.[1] The Seal of the AcropolisLambda Sigma Phi’s crest is made up of 12 elements: two red rampant lions, three gold triune stars, blue shield, black cross, white open book, gold crescent moon, gold balance, gold lyre, and gold ship.[2] Organization of the FraternityLambda Sigma Phi is organized by the National Board overseeing the individual chapters of the fraternity. The National Board is made up of five board members, two of which being the President of the National Board and the Secretary.[1] Each chapter is organized by the executive board and the numerous chair positions. Chapter Executive Boards consist of the President, Vice President of External, Vice President of Internal, Vice President of Judicial, Chaplain, Secretary, and the Treasurer.[1] Pledging and EducationFormal Association of the fraternity happens every fall and spring semester at Lambda Sigma Phi chapters. New members then go through a pledgeship/education period of eight weeks learning about accountability, what it means to be a brother, and the history and values of Lambda Sigma Phi. During pledgeship, new members will be given The Standard and will be expected to learn the materials along with their pledge brothers.
