Larry Hartsell was a martial artist, Los Angeles student of Bruce Lee, pioneer of Jeet Kune Do Grappling, and founder of the Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do Grappling Association. Larry Hartsell was born on August 15, 1942 in Charlotte, North Carolina. His first exposure to combat sports was as a high school wrestler[1] and he began his martial arts training in the art of Judo in 1957 when he enrolled at a local club. Larry took an interest in the art of Tang Soo Do after meeting a Korean foreign exchange student at Wingate Junior College in North Carolina. Larry became enamored with martial arts and found and read the available books in 1960 which were authored by Masutatsu Oyama, Ed Parker, and Hidetaka Nishiyama. Hartsell's interest in Martial Arts inspired him to move to the Los Angeles area where to took up the study of Shotokan Karate under Nishiyama at the University of California. In 1961, Larry happened to be passing the infamous Ed Parker's Kenpo School on Santa Monica Blvd. and looked in. He liked what he saw and decided that that Kenpo was more of a fit for him than Shotokan.[2] He became a student of Ed Parker's that same year and studied with him until 1969. Larry received his black belt in Kenpo on (look up date on his certificate). It was at Ed Parker's school that Larry first met Dan Inosanto. Dan Inosanto had started training with Bruce after Ed Parker's 1964 Long Beach International Karate Championships and had invited Larry to meet Bruce. After sparring with Bruce Lee, who dominated the match, Larry asked to become a student of Bruce and was accepted.[3] Larry's training with Ed Parker and Bruce Lee was interrupted by a tour of duty in Vietnam from 1966 to 1967. Upon returning to Los Angeles after his service, he resumed his study in Kenpo with Ed Parker and Jeet Kune Do with Bruce Lee and Dan Inosanto. [4] Larry was admitted to a small group of students who trained with Bruce Lee personally at his home and also were some of the members of his social group.[5] After the death of Bruce Lee, Larry moved back to North Carolina and opened a Jeet Kune Do school which was one of the only three authorized schools at the time and the only one east of California and Washington.[6] Larry and law enforcement Larry and security work - the Penguin Larry and personal security/bodyguard work Mr. T, Flynt In the 1980's, Larry was one of four bodyguards for Mr. T. during the last six months of the filming of the television series "The A-Team."
