Originally airing on Cartoon Network on November 4, 2013, the episode was directed by Kevin Dart and written and storyboarded by Kat Morris and Rebecca Sugar. PlotSteven Universe (Zach Callison) and Amethyst (Michaela Dietz), one of his Crystal Gem guardians, are ordering snacks at the local French fry shop, Beach Citywalk Fries, when they notice an enormous orb hurtling towards Earth. They join their Gem teammates Pearl (Deedee Magno-Hall) and Garnet (Estelle) on the beach and try thinking of a plan to stop the “Red Eye”. The Gems then recall that a “laser light cannon” used by Steven’s late mother and their leader, Rose Quartz, is the only weapon powerful enough to destroy it. Steven believes his human father, Greg Universe (Tom Scharpling), may still have the cannon, but the Gems insist that Rose would not have entrusted him with it or that he may have lost or broke it. Steven goes to the carwash Greg owns, It’s a Wash, and tries waking up Greg, who is asleep in the van where he lives. He sets off the car alarm, causing Greg to emerge from the van, prepared to attack any intruders. Greg is relieved to see Steven, who explains the current crisis, then drives his son to an old storage unit where he may have stored the cannon. While Steven searches through an array of junk, Greg tells him about how he met Rose in his younger days when he was an aspiring rock singer: they met at one of his concerts, and Rose “gave up her physical form” so Steven, who inherited his mother’s navel gemstone, could be born. Steven accidentally steps on a picture of his parents during his search, but Greg tells him not to worry and that “If every porkchop were perfect, we wouldn’t have hotdogs.” A pink glow suddenly appears in the unit, allowing Steven to find the cannon. He and Greg load the cannon in a toy wagon, which they then tow to the beach using the van while listening to one of Greg’s old albums. The Universes arrive at the beach just as the Red Eye emits a gravitational pull, destroying everything in range. The Gems try various methods to activate the cannon but fail. Greg assures them they will find another way, and Steven repeats, “If every porkchop were perfect, we wouldn’t have hotdogs.” He realizes this is the key to activating the cannon, so the Gems gather around it and fire a vaguely Rose-shaped laser beam from it at the Red Eye, shattering the entity and leaving the city mostly unharmed.
