Alexis Dawn Sun (born September 19, 1998)[1] is an American college volleyball player at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. As a high school senior at Santa Fe Christian School, she was named the Gatorade National Volleyball Player of the Year[2].She was the number 1 national recruit entering college and enrolled at the University of Texas following graduation in 2017. After her freshman year at Texas, she announced in April of 2018 she would be transferring to the University of Nebraska.[3]

Early Life

Lexi Sun was born and raised in Encinitas, California to Conrad and Beth Sun. Conrad played basketball for Sacramento State University, then later for the Taiwanese National Team. She has two siblings, her brother Marcus and sister Natalie.[4]

Growing up, she played competitive soccer for eight years, winning back-to-back state cups, but quickly grew to be 5'10, too tall for soccer.[5] Her parents signed her up for volleyball and she proved to be naturally gifted.

High School Career

Sun attended Santa Fe Christian, a private school in Solana Beach, California. Her freshman year, she registered 390 kills and 164 digs, finishing the year with a .312 hitting percentage.[6] She was named to the MaxPreps underclass All-American team[7] and the California Volleyball All-State team[8] in 2014.

In her sophomore year, she finished with 240 kills and 235 digs, hitting .298 on the year[9]. During this year, she was named the player of the match three times, establishing herself as one of the nations top high school players

Entering into her junior year, she was named to the 2015 MaxPreps Preseason All-American Team. However, due to her having a very active summer playing for the USA Under-18 National Team, she elected to sit out her junior season, giving herself time to rest and recover. In March of 2015, she officially committed to playing volleyball at the University of Texas[10].

Sun decided to return to her high school volleyball team for her senior year in the fall of 2016. She finished the year with a career high 630 kills, 288 digs, and a .431 hitting percentage. [11]She was named player of the match 11 times and led the Eagles to a 32-8 record.[12] She was named the MaxPreps California Player of the Year [13]after averaging 28 kills per match. She would also go on to be named the MaxPreps National Volleyball Player of the Year, Gatorade National Player of the Year, and was voted MVP at the Under Armor All-American game[14]. She was ranked by many publications as the number 1 high school recruit, despite having already committed to Texas the previous year.

USA Volleyball Junior Teams

Sun was a part of the Under-17 USA Beach Volleyball team that won gold at the FIVB World Championships in Mexico[15]. In the summer of 2015, Sun travelled to Peru to play in the World Championships with the USA Under-18 National Team. There, she led the team in scoring and eventually led the team to a silver medal[16]. The following summer, she played with the USA Volleyball Women's Junior National Team before returning to her high school team to play in her senior season. [17]

College Career

University of Texas (2017-2018)

Sun arrived at the University of Texas in 2017, following a dominant senior season at Santa Fe Christian. During her 2017 season at Texas, she registered 337 kills, second on the team, along with 151 digs[18]. She helped the longhorns to a perfect 16-0 record in Big 12 conference play, 27-3 overall[19]. Sun was a unanimous first team all-Big 12 selection, three time Big-12 freshman of the week, and was an AVCA All-American honorable mention[20]. She announced in April of 2018 she would be transferring to the University of Nebraska to continue her career.

University of Nebraska-Lincoln (2018-present)

After arriving in Lincoln in the summer of 2018, Sun was forced to sit out of preseason workouts and the first 7 matches of the 2018 season due to an upper body injury[21]. In her first game as a husker, she registered 13 kills and 5 digs against New Mexico University[22]. She finished the year second on the team in kills with 327, averaging 3.11 per set. She also finished with 282 digs, 30 serving aces, and 56 blocks.[23] The team finished the year 29-7, making it to their fourth consecutive NCAA Final Four before falling to Stanford in the NCAA National Championship match.[24] Sun had a team high 19 kills in the national semifinal win over Illinois to go along with 12 digs.
