The Liberal Institute (Czech: Liberální institut) is a Czech libertarian think tank headquartered in Prague, Czech Republic. It was founded as the Liberální spolek F. A. Hayeka in 1989 and changed its name to its current form on February 6, 1990. It is the oldest libertarian think tank in the Czech Republic. The Liberal Institute was established with the aim to develop and apply ideas of classical liberalism. Its Annual Lecture was delievered by four Nobel Prize laureates: Gary Becker, Milton Friedman, James M. Buchanan, and Vernon L. IdeologyThe Liberal Institute has published works in the general area of classical liberalism, libertarianism, ordoliberalism, and anarchocapitalism; it focuses also on tax reform, less regulation, competition, abolition of state agencies, and criticism of the European Union. BusinessThe Liberal Institute's main areas of advocacy are individual liberty, limited government, free markets, and peace. Its business focuses on books publication, seminars, lectures, and societal influence through media. FinancingThe Institute is financed through private donations and accepts no public money. Summer schoolsSince 1996, The Liberal Institute organizes summer schools for high-school and college students. Tax Freedom DayThe Institute calculates the Tax Freedom Day for the Czech Republic every year and organizes a public happening to celebrate it. Annual LectureAlmost every year since 1995, the Liberal Institute organizes a lecture with a significant foreign libertarian personality who is given an award “for the contribution to the development of liberal thoughts and for the realiza- tion of freedom, private property, competition and rule of law in practice.” List of lectures:
PublicationsTheLiberal Institute has published over 100 translations of foreign books and papers as well as its own research. Among the foreign books translated by the Institute are e.g. The Wealth of Nations, The Theory of Moral Sentiments, Economics in One Lesson, In Defense of Global Capitalism, Man, Economy, and State and others.
