This is a listing of all notable characters that have appeared in the Shantae franchise. Main charactersProtagonistsShantaeShantae is a female half-genie and a skilled fighter who is tasked at maintaining justice and order to Sequin Land, especially her hometown, Scuttle Town. Initially hesitant about revealing her status as a half-genie in the first game, she eventually gets over her insecurities when the townsfolk accept her status. Her self-proclaimed archnemesis is the female pirate Risky Boots, who is overly obsessed with genie magic in order to grant her nefarious wishes; however, Shantae does not hesitate to fight other villains that cross paths with her, such as the Barons of Sequin Land. While Shantae's signature combat move is her hair whip, she also engages in dances to transform into other beings. Prominent transformations include a monkey, which allows Shantae to scale walls, an elephant, allowing Shantae to ram certain obstacles, and a mermaid, which allows Shantae to swim freely underwater. Shantae lives in a lighthouse on the coast of Polyp Bay along the outskirts of Scuttle Town, primarily to spot danger from long distances. Shantae's character was created by Erin Bell, the wife of Matt Bozon, during their engagement in 1994. Matt liked the idea, and began working more on the lore for the character.[1] Uncle MimicMimic is Shantae's bearded uncle and a skilled excavator and inventor. Despite the shortcomings of their relationship, Mimic cares deeply for his niece and will do anything to make her happy. He owns a workshop in Scuttle Town, in which he experiments with many ancient artifacts and especially genie magic. His inventions are often the targets of Risky Boots's plots, in which Shantae is sent to retrieve it; even if the invention is destroyed, Mimic is not disappointed, and continues to work on his inventions regardless of risks. SkySky is Shantae's lifelong friend, and a renowned war bird trainer. Originally hailing from Oasis Town, Sky is now a permanent resident of Scuttle Town, owning a hatchery there. Shantae usually looks to Sky as a mentor and sisterly figure, often listening to the wisdom she has to impart and good-naturedly tease each other. Sky's most loyal pet bird is a crossbred wren/finch appropriately named Wrench, who uses a variety of tools for Sky and Shantae and, as shown in Half-Genie Hero, can even grow massive in size, but sometimes thinks of Bolo as inferior to him. Sky's parents are seen in Pirate's Curse, but it is revealed that Sky shares a rather adversarial and humiliating relationship with them. Sky was originally developed under the name "Twitch", but her name was changed in development. BoloBolo is Mimic's assistant, and a martial artist and tactical fighter who is also a close friend of Shantae's. Despite his experience in the ways of combat, Bolo tends to be absent-minded and has a rather quirky personality. He also tends to be seductive towards women, including but not limited to Risky Boots, the bath house manager in Scuttle Town, and even his own implied grandmother. He often jumps at the chance to fight, only to end up becoming a victim himself. Despite this, he is still able to prove his worth, especially when he gave Shantae a corrupted drive to cause Ammo Baron's cannon to misfire in Pirate's Curse. RottytopsRottytops, often nicknamed Rotty, is a human zombie and another close friend of Shantae's. She tends to be happy-go-lucky most of the time, and can keep her cool even in certain disastrous events, such as Hypno Baron's "creature of unspeakable horror" scare in Half-Genie Hero (which turns out to be just Squid Baron). Her personality can sometimes go overboard, such as when Risky Boots manipulated her and her brothers into kidnapping Mimic for a reneged promise in Risky's Revenge. Despite this, she maintains an uncomplicated friendship with Shantae. In the Half-Genie Hero DLC "Friends to the End", it is revealed that Shantae sees Rotty as her former human self, with the latter hypothesizing that this is the reason why Shantae is more welcoming of Rotty than much of the other inhabitants of Sequin Land. Antagonists and antiheroesRisky BootsRisky Boots is a female pirate captain, the self-proclaimed "Queen of the Seven Seas", the unchallenged leader of the Tinkerbats, and Shantae's sworn nemesis. Her ultimate goal is to harness genie magic in order to rule over both Sequin Land and the Genie Realm with disarray and chaos. To this end, she has used a number of tactics to do so, her most prominent including stealing and/or corrupting one of Mimic's inventions. Despite this, her plans are always foiled by Shantae in the end. Risky has many tactics herself, such as firing shots from her pistol, using her hat as a parafoil, and traveling faster using her boots and scimitar. Ammo BaronAmmo Baron is one of the Barons of Sequin Land and the sleazy cyclops leader of the Ammonian Army, a group that seeks to militarize Sequin Land. To this end, Ammo Baron vows to pull off his conquest by tricking Scuttlebutt into selling Scuttle Town. He did manage to take over Scuttle Town in Pirate's Curse, but was evicted by the end of the game. Techno BaronTechno Baron is a Baron of Sequin Land introduced in Pirate's Curse, resembling a short reptilian creature with an eye-concealing helmet. His goal is to become the wealthiest inhabitant of Sequin Land, often colluding with the Ammo Baron to sell his "artistic" weaponry. Hypno BaronHypno Baron is a Baron of Sequin Land and a robed skeletal being capable of various types of sorcery and alchemy. Despite his alleged goal to wreak havoc on Sequin Land, he seems to be aimed more towards producing licensed merchandise, even respecting Shantae as a worthy opponent. Squid BaronSquid Baron is a Baron of Sequin Land and a red, spherical squid with stubby tentacles. He is a recurring antihero, and amidst his rudeness and condescension, Squid Baron fights Shantae purely for his good-natured interests. He also tends to break the fourth wall more than any other character in the franchise, referring to himself as a "filler boss" and claims to suffer "post-boss syndrome" whenever he misses fighting Shantae. Holly LingerbeanHolly is a human memory able to manifest a physical form, introduced in Half-Genie Hero. She is a memory of the "most important person of all time" that was renowned in Tassel Town before the town perished in a sandstorm. In order to preserve the memories of her, she enlisted help from a giant sandworm named Wilbur to drain memories of unsuspecting victims. When Holly "replaced" Shantae as a guardian genie, she used this guise to steal the memories of the humans in Scuttle Town. This had no effect on Shantae, who fought and defeated Wilbur after following both of them to their hideout in the former location of Tassel Town. This action caused Holly to dissipate and the stolen memories recovered. In both DLC packs in the game, it is revealed that Holly can be resurrected simply by one remembering something pertaining to her. It is also revealed that she made a pact with Nega-Shantae, which was called off after Holly was defeated for good by Sky, Bolo, and Rottytops. Secondary charactersProtagonistsMayor ScuttlebuttScuttlebutt is the pompous, turban-donning mayor of Scuttle Town. He tends to be dim-witted and often jumps to conclusions, being known to fire Shantae from her Guardian Genie position based on inconclusive evidence. He is also a chocoholic and tends to make poor diplomatic choices, such as when he sold Scuttle Town to Ammo Baron and spent his money on chocolates in Pirate's Curse. Abner and PoeAbner and Poe are Rottytops's brothers. Initially viewed as villains when Risky Boots tricked them into working for her in Risky's Revenge, they have since made amends to Shantae. While Abner is stout and has a more demanding and laid back personality, Poe is more plump, having eyes with no visible pupils and an unusual mouth shape, and is caring and deeply emotional. Both brothers own a caravan drawn by skeletal horses, which they use to travel to vacation homes, mainly those in dark and spooky environments. Poe also loaned Shantae a zombie hamster in Half-Genie Hero (revealed to be named Dookies in the game's ending), trusting that she could take care of him better than he could. AntagonistsNega-ShantaeNega-Shantae is Shantae's corrupted, evil alter-ego, usually summoned by Risky Boots. She appears as the final boss of Risky's Revenge and also makes a brief appearance in Half-Genie Hero. TinkerbatTinkerbats are Risky's soldiers, characterized by their dark bodies, yellow eyes, red bandannas worn on their heads, and scimitars. Though the vast majority of Tinkerbats are loyal to Risky, not all of them are very smart. The lone notable Tinkerbat is one that carries a quill and notebook, allowing Risky to save her game in the "Pirate Queen Quest" DLC of Half-Genie Hero. Twitch and VinegarTwitch and Vinegar are two high-ranking Ammonian soldiers introduced in Pirate's Curse. While Twitch has two ponytails, wears visors, and uses an arsenal of bombs, Vinegar has short hair, face paint running vertically from her eyes, and specializes more so in blasters.
