Toronto's Iranian community is a vibrant and dynamic one and they have grown mostly along Yonge Street. In the heart of Toronto's Little Persia District there is the Iranian Plaza where some of the original stores remain open and busy serving the customers. The Persian community in Canada and more specifically Toronto is mostly concentrated in North York, Thornhill and Richmond Hill area. The Iranian diaspora that left Iran before or during the Islamic Revelation in 1979 mostly migrated to the US and settled in Los Angeles, California where they formed a neighborhood that is known as Tehrangeles. However, the second wave of the immigrants chose Canada as their new home and settled near what is known as Little Persia in Toronto. Little Persia in North York together with Tirgan Festival and Toranj have been promoting the Persian food, art and culture in the recent years to introduce the rich history of Iran to Canadians in major cities of Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver. Persians are amongst some of the very successful people in business, luxury real estate, as well as the local politics in Canada. Future Shop, Hakim Optical, Liberty Development and Mizrahi Development are a few of the highly successful companies founded by Iranians in Canada. Persians play a major role in Canadian economy and are famous for their adapting to their new home and making their community better. Today in Toronto's Little Persia you can find all sorts of Iranian food and products at a reasonable price which is mostly imported either from the motherland Iran or from California where there is a huge population of Iranians outside of Iran. Some of the oldest supermarkets in Little Persia are Super Khorak, Super Arzon and Super Tehran. Many restaurants have been around that would prepare and cook traditional Persian Kabab and Stews. Guests can find authentic Persian pastries and tea in every corner of Little Persia. This is home away from home for many Persians who made Canada their home. |
