Elizabeth Massie is a film and television director, known for Companeras, and What a Girl Wants. She has written and produced for over forty television series.[1] She was born February 19, 1965, to Suzanne Massie and Robert Kinloch Massie III. She grew up in Paris and Irvington, New York, the youngest of three children. She is the producer of several television shows on Investigation Discovery, including Unusual Suspects and The Devil Speaks.[2][3]

Early Life and education

Elizabeth went to the Hackley School, a private school in Tarrytown, New York. She went on to attend Yale University, graduating in 1986. After graduating college, Massie spent time in both New York City and Los Angeles, working as an actor and on film sets. She worked as the executive assistant to director Mike Nichols on the film The Birdcage, also appearing in the final scene of the film as a bridesmaid. She received her MFA from the American Film Institute in 1998.


Personal Life

After meeting Hugo Vereker through shared interest in getting the film rights to a book, the two began a relationship. They were married in 2002. The couple was divorced in 2012. They have two children. Massie is also the aunt and godmother of acclaimed actress Katie Massie.[4] She is now involved with Garrett Jewett, an artist.

Career

In 1999, Massie was one of founders of CHC Productions, a film production company focused on creating documentary films on social issues, in particular, women's issues. Their first film was titled Who Cares About Girls? and the next What A Girl Wants.[5]

Massie wrote Emmanuel's Gift, a feature documentary on a disabled Ghanian bicyclist named Emmanuel Yeboah.[6] The film was narrated by Oprah Winfrey and that won the 2006 Media Access Award for Outstanding Documentary.[7]

In 2019, Massie's next produced work, The Lake Erie Murders, will be released.[8]
