Luka is an AI technology company co-founded in 2014 by Eugenia Kuyda and Phil Dudchuk.[1] The company is best known for creating Roman Mazurenko, a chatbot app created to emulate and memorialize Kuyda's best friend of the same name, [2] and Replika, an AI chatbot app created to replicate its user's likeness. [3]

Products

Roman Mazurenko

Following the death of her best friend, Roman Mazurenko, in late 2015, Kuyda was inspired by the Black Mirror episode "Be Right Back" to memorialize her friend in a chatbot app.[4] Using the thousands of texts and messages sent between herself and Mazurenko and the chatbot interface developed for Luka, Kuyda created a neural network that emulated Mazurenko's turns of phrase and speech patterns. [5]

Reception

Following the launch of the app in May 2016, four friends of Kuyda expressed discomfort with the bot, stating that she had "failed to learn the lesson of the Black Mirror episode" [2]. However, many users expressed interest in Luka building bots to emulate themselves and inspired Kuyda to change the company's direction to create Replika. [3]

Replika

Replika is an AI chatbot created to emulate the speech and personality of its users through the messages that the users send. [6] Luka describes the chatbot as "a space where you can safely share your thoughts, feelings, beliefs, experiences, memories, dreams – your “private perceptual world". [1]
