LunaDNA is a community-owned health information platform, founded in 2017 by Bob Kain, David Lewis, and Dawn Barry to be used for health benefits in the field of Genomics and health research. [1] LunaDNA is the first platform to be given approval by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission for contributing health data. [2][3] [4] Any individual that health information to the LunaDNA platform are considered co-owners of the platform are respectively referred to as “members” and receive shares of ownership in the platform. The platform allocates shares for completing its health surveys and for uploading your DNA sequence. DNA data can be uploaded from services like 23andMe, Ancestry.com, MyHeritage and Family Tree DNA. President Dawn Barry stated that, “[offering equity] fixes earlier issues of imbalance and value in research.” [3] LunaDNA’s mission is to “transform health data into health breakthroughs” and was developed to advance health research agendas by engaging a range of stakeholders, including individuals with any health information, researchers, and industry professionals and offering to reward people for sharing directly for public benefit. LunaDNA is managed by LunaPBC, a public benefit corporation. [3] Once uploaded to the platform, members data then becomes encrypted and de-identified using blockchain technology. Health and DNA data is stored separately from personal information. The platform them shares this data with nonprofits, and in the future intends to share with pharmaceutical companies that will pay market rates. [4] In January of 2019 LunaDNA announced its partnered with Genetic Alliance at the Precision Medicine World Conference [https://www.pmwcintl.com/] and will be merging their two platforms to provide members with more resources to support health management and maximizing research opportunities [5].
