Lydia Solutions is a french company, created in 2011, specialised in the online payment by smartphone. It develops and runs the mobile app Lydia which allows its users to send and receive money for free and to pay in some shops and on different websites.

History

The company Lydia Solutions was created in September 2011 in the jurisdiction of the Commercial Court of Paris. The founders are Cyril Chiche and Antoine Porte, Cyril Chiche is the first president[1],[2].

The Lydia application was launched in France in July 2013. Cyril Chiche, cofounder and general manager of Lydia Solutions, has the ambition to create a universal means of payment: ""There are around 300 payment methods in France, but none is universal in terms of usage. The payment methods are segmented by usage, with Lydia we want to recreate a universal payment method."[3]

In September 2015, Lydia has been was elected as one of the top 100 most exciting European startups by Wired.[4].

On March 8 2016, a partnership between Lydia and Tupperware France was unveiled, in order to substitute the bank cheque by Lydia during the Tupperware meeting.[5].

In September 2016, the company launches the Lydia card, an international MasterCard connected to the application[6],[7]. It also gives the possibility to exchange money in a conversation on Slack with the robot @LydiaBot (since April 2016)[8],[9] and to ask for money from Siri and iMessage (since November 2016).

In 2017, the application opens in Europe with deployments in Ireland (April), Spain (June), United Kingdom (July) and Portugal (September)[10]. Germany is scheduled for the end of the year[10].

In June 2017, the payment by the Lydia application is now accepted in 400 Franprix stores (not franchised), thanks to an alliance with the Casino Group[11],[12]. At the end of November 2017, Lydia becomes a method of payment on the online trading website Cdiscount, also owned by the Casino Group[13],[14].

The application becomes compatible with Apple Pay on December 5, 2017[15]. It is only from the end of June 2018 that the service will become compatible with Samsung Pay. In the same month, Lydia launches its offer for instant consumer credit (with Banque Casino as a partner)[16].

How to use the app

Between individuals

The app is design to be easily accessible. The user downloads the application for free on his mobile (with Android or iOS), creates his account and saves a credit card. He can then directly start paying online or between owners of the application Lydia without any fees[17].

If ever the user transfers money from his bank account to his Lydia account the possible amount is limited on the free version. But with the premium function this amount is no longer limited, this premium feature costs € 3.99 per month[18] unless the person is under 25 years old, age until this function is free.

By professionals

The application can also be used by professionals to receive payments from customers: they pay with their classic Lydia application while professionals cash with the application Lydia Pro. Initially restricted to the student community (cafeterias, evening receptions), the process extends thanks to partnerships with Tupperware[19] and Franprix[20],[21]. The customer types the amount he has to pay on his phone which then generates a QR code that the merchant scans with his terminal[22]. Online payment is also available and is being used by Cdiscount and Undiz as a result of partnerships[22].

Lydia charges a commission of 0.7 to 1.5% on all payments made[23].

Popularity of Lydia

According to the American magazine Wired, the application Lydia would have been downloaded more than 50,000 times in 2014[24] and 90,000 times in 2015[25] according to La Tribune.

Mid-2017 in France, the service had 900,000 users and 500,000 transactions were carried out each month[26]. At the end of 2017, the company claimed to have more than 1.4 million users (including 750,000 individuals) in the five countries where it currently operates (France, Ireland, Spain, the United Kingdom and Portugal). ) and showed its ambition to enter more European countries market[27]. About 40% of these users are active each month, generating just over a million transactions per month[28].
