Maatalii Okalik is a Inuk Canadian political advocate. She is the former president of the National Inuit Youth Council of Canada and works for the government of Nunavut as the Chief of Protocol with the Department of Executive and Intergovernmental Affairs. BiographyEarly Life and EducationOkalik was born in 1990 in Nunavut, Canada and was raised by a single mother. Her relatives are from the Panniqtuuq, Nunavut area.[1] Okalik completed her Bachelor's degree at Carleton University in Ottawa, Ontario. She majored in Human Rights and Political Science and minored in Aboriginal studies. During her time at Carleton, Okalik won several scholarships, including the Carleton University Entrance Scholarship, the Gordon Robertson National Inuit Scholarship, Mississauga’s of the New Credit First Nation Scholarship, the Jenny Gilbertson Memorial Fund Scholarship, the NITC Scholarship, the Nunasi Corporation Scholarship, the Native Women’s Association – Helen Bassett Scholarship and the New Sun New Beginning Bursary.[2][3] CareerOkalik has previously worked as a Research and Policy Analyst for the Government of Nunavut and as a Juridicial Officer for the Nunavut Court of Justice. In addition, she has worked as a Policy Advisor in the Inuit Relations Secretariat in the Federal Department of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada. Okalik has also as a National Aboriginal Health Organization Research Advisor, where she co-authored two publications on community health determinants. She has held management positions at the University of Laval, Nunavut Sivuniksavut, Minwaashin Lodge/Tungasuvvingat Inuit and was the President of the Ottawa Inuit Children’s Centre.[4] On June 11, 2015, Okalik was elected president of the National Inuit Youth Council.[5] In her role Okalik represents Inuit youth from the Nunavut, Nunavik, Inuvialuit, and Nunatsiavut regions. She has spoken at Canada's parliament addressing the Senate Standing Committee on Indigenous Affairs and at United Nations forums, including COP21 in Paris and COP22 in Morocco.[6] Okalik currently works full time with the Government of Nunavut as Chief of Protocol with the Department of Executive and Intergovernmental Affairs.
