}}Maggie Lunn (1961 - 2017) was a British casting director who worked in theatre (Royal Shakespeare Company, National Theatre, Almeida), film (Notes on a Scandal) and television (BBC - Cranford).[1]

Personal Life

She was born in Jesmond, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK, the youngest child of John (a headteacher) and Norah (née Lucey) Lunn. She attended Sacred Heart Grammar School, Felham and then studied English at Newcastle University. She married Paul Jesson in 2008 and had a daughter from an earlier relationship.[1]

Career

After graduating from University she embarked on a career in journalism, initially as a research assistant at the newspaper Daily Telegraph and then at the satirical political magazine Private Eye[2] until 1987.

She then became an assistant casting director to Gill Titchmarsh followed by Gail Stevens and then assistant to Adrian Noble. She also worked as an agent for International Creative Management.[3] In 1995 she was appointed as head of casting at the Royal Shakespeare Company.[4] [5]She became an artistic associate at the Almeida theatre, London at the invitation of its artistic director Richard Attenborough with responsibility for casting, assembling creative teams, programming policy and training,[6] While in this post she was simultaneously head of casting at the National Theatre from 2001 - 2002.[3][6]

She then became a freelance casting director and worked on TV as well as theatrical productions.[7] This included the production of The Rivals at Bristol Old Vic in 2016 where the cast she put together was part of the success of the production.[8]

Her casting decisions were influential at the start of the careers of several including David Oyelowo, Benedict Cumberbatch, Ben Whishaw, Alex Jennings, Eddie Redmayne, Eve Best, Rory Kinnear[1] and Lucian Msamati[9].
