Magnus Penker (born 1968) is a Swedish computer scientist, organizational theorist, specializing in innovation, digitization and business transformation, co-founder of "Innovation360 Group" and "Open Training AB" , and author known for his books "Business modeling with UML" and "UML toolkit".[1][2]

Life and works

After his doctoral studies in computer science and engineering in the 1980's and 1990's, Penker and Hans-Erik Eriksson founded the company "Open Training in Sweden AB", an online learning and e-training institute.[3] They sold the company in 2004, which continued as Open Training Sweden AB, subsidiary of Edvantage Group AS. [4]

In the late 1990s and early 2000s Penker co-authored a series of books on business modeling and Unified Modeling Language (UML) in English, and have been translated to Japanese and Chinese. His book "UML Toolkit" was published in collaboration with The Object Management Group (OMG), the official organization behind UML.[5] Penker co-authored his first book in Swedish with Hans-Erik Eriksson on the subject object-oriented programming and was published in 1996. [6]

Work

In their Business modeling with UML Penker and Eriksson explained that Unified Modeling Language (UML) has quickly been adopted as the standard modeling software language for modeling systems and can be used for business modeling and for the software models.

Penker and Eriksson propose a fundamental business domain modeling concept, known as the Eriksson-Penker Business Extension. They extend UML with adapted model elements for business modeling in order to clearly identify and visualize the important concepts of a business: processes, goals, resources, and rules. This enterprise modeling approach was similar to CIMOSA.[7] [8]. The extensions can be applied for "the analysis and description of enterprise-wide data structures and conversions between them (OMG Common Data Warehouse Metamodel - OMG CWM), and for modelling business workflows (Workflow Management Coalition Metamodel)."[9]

Sparx Systems has built a tool with Eriksson-Penker extensions in their "Enterprise Architect (software)", which is a visual modeling and design tool based on the Object Management Group (OMG) Unified Modeling Language (UML) [10] and Enterprise Solution are holding an education program on Eriksson-Penker business extensions. [11]

InnoSurvey

In 2006, Penker started to develop "InnoSurvey", which is a methodology and global innovation database used to analyze and provide advice to companies, business leaders, and scientists. In 2014 it was released on the market. Today, Penker is the CEO of the Innovation360 Group, which is headquartered in Stockholm, Sweden and in New York, USA.[12]
