After graduating in Physics from Universidad Complutense (UCM, Madrid, 1963) he spent two years (1963-65) in the Theory Division of the Spanish Nuclear Research Center (Junta de Energia Nuclear). In 1965 he moved to Belgium to carry on research for his doctorate in the School of Prof. Ilya Prigogine at Universite Libre de Bruxelles (ULB). He got the Ph.D. from UCM in November 1968 (supervisor Prof. M. Castans, foreign supervisor Prof. G. Nicolis) and in January 1970 from ULB (supervisor Prof. P. Resibois). In 1969 he moved to the University of Texas at Austin (USA) as NSF Faculty Associate of its Center for Statistical Mechanics and Thermodynamics headed by Prof. I. Prigogine. There under the guidance of Prof. R. S. Schechter he started working on hydrodynamic instabilities, a field where he has been for several decades. Prof. Velarde has been awarded the Honorary Doctorate from the Universite de Provence (Aix-Marseille I, 1994) where he had been Visiting Professor over extended periods of time and from the Chernichevsky State Research University (Saratov, 2010) for over a decade of research collaboration with colleagues there. Medal of the Royal Spanish Academy of Sciences (1991), Palmes Academiques (1994, France), Rammal Medal of the Societe Francaise de Physique and the Fondation de l'Ecole Normale Superieure (1996), DuPont Science Prize (2003) [1], Medal, Royal Spanish Physical Society (2006), Ordre N. Merite (2013, France, officier) [2], Blaise Pascal medal for Physics (2015, EURASC). He was elected to membership of the Academia Europaea (since 1993; Council member, 2002-2008) [3] and of the European Academy of Sciences (since 2014, EURASC) [4].
