Mardi Gras is a cruise ship currently under construction for Carnival Cruise Line, a division of Carnival Corporation & plc. The first of Carnival's Excellence-class ships, and was laid down by her builder, Meyer Turku, on November 15, 2018.[1]

Mardi Gras will be the first cruise ship in North America powered by Liquefied Natural Gas, one of the cleanest burning fuels.

This is one of two cruise ships that Carnival is building in the Excellence-class.[2]

The name of the ship was revealed after the December 5, 2018 airing of Wheel of Fortune.[3] She will be the first ship in the Carnival fleet to not include Carnival as part of her name when launched since Carnival Paradise.

On Board Innovations

On December 13, 2018 it was announced that Mardi Gras would have the first roller coaster at sea. Named BOLT: Ultimate Sea Coaster, it will span 800 feet across the top decks and propel cruisers up to 40 mph around twists and turns 20 stories above sea level. The cars will seat two people each, nearly 200 feet above sea-level. The coaster will be constructed by Maurer Rides of Germany[4]

More features are to be announced at a later date closer to vessel completion.

Home Porting

Mardi Gras will be home ported at Port Canaveral, Florida.[5] Port Canaveral has agreed to pay $150 million for a new two story terminal for the Mardi Gras.[6]

Construction

On November 15, 2018 preceded by a ceremony at the shipyard in Finland, the first pieces of steel were cut for the ship; indicating the start of construction. The ship is due to be completed in Spring 2020.[7]

Characteristics

Mardi Gras will be the largest Carnival ship ever with a gross tonnage of over 180,000 and the first ship in Carnival's XL class. The ship will be able to accommodate 5,200 passengers.It will be the first cruise-ship in North America to run on Liquified Natural Gas(LNG).[8][9]
