The group was founded in 2002 by director Valerie Vargas and consists of ten female mariachi musicians. HistoryThe name Mariachi Las Alteñas is derived from "los altos de Jalisco" referring to the birthplace of mariachi music in Jalisco, Mexico. The higher regions of the area are described as being near the top of the world, with the women residing there referred to as "las alteñas". The group has a complete instrumentation, which includes five violins, two trumpets, a guitarron, vihuela, and guitar, creating a full mariachi sound acknowledged in the industry. Valerie Vargas was a young female mariachi musician in San Antonio, Texas when she formed the group after graduating high school in 2002.[1] The original group consisted of local female musicians that were part of a largely-male mariachi community. They performed in restaurants and at special events, but began to gain a fanbase for their talent and showmanship and were recruited across the country. "Going into it at such a young age, you don’t know what to expect, but we had a lot of support" said Vargas. "Most of the girls in the group are out of college and have careers. A lot of them are mothers. We take pride in the fact that we’re a female group and we can also do so many other things in life and still be successful."[2] The group hit a major milestone in 2004 winning first place at the Houston Rodeo's Go Tejano Committee Mariachi Invitational. They also won in 2005 and 2010. Mariachi Las Alteñas appeared on a live broadcast of NBC's Good Morning America representing San Antonio alongside the city's Mayor Julian Castro in 2009.[3] The group was invited to perform at South by Southwest Music Fesitval in 2014, being the only mariachi group of the event's official musical acts.[4] In November 2017 the group released their album Nuestros XV. The album was recorded and produced at Blue Cat Studios in San Antonio, Texas and included two original songs written for the project: "Consejo de Padre" composed by Cirilo Campos and "Aire Libre" composed by Baldomar Villareal.
