The Maria SS Della ‘Sunta Society is an organization based in Westbury, New York, that was founded in 1911 by Italian immigrants from Durazzano, Naples, Nola, and Saviano. The society’s main purpose is to conserve the Italian heritage and Roman Catholic religious practices brought over to the United States. The organization has an annual Feast of the Assumption held in August every year, to celebrate the Blessed Mother and honor the historic societal traditions with Italian food, carnival rides, and fireworks. The society also contributes to the local Westbury community groups and well known charities such as St. Jude Children's Hospital, The Salvation Army, American Red Cross, and more. HistoryAlthough the society was formed in 1911, the society’s first president, Nicola Piscitelli, was chosen in 1936. Dominick Piscitelli, son of Nicola, became president later on, and in 1974, was elected as Westbury village’s first Italian American mayor. Early on, members of the society constructed a function hall on Maple Street to host meetings, weddings, dances and events. The hall is regularly utilized today and still stands on now Maple Avenue. Though other societies suspended activity during World War II, the Della ‘Sunta Society continued practices including their Annual Feast of the Assumption. Upon Italy’s shift to the Allies alliance, the society sent clothing to the destitute in Italy. The St. Brigid’s Church of Westbury is the affiliated parish that began holding masses in Italian, and still stands today. Annual Assumption FeastThe Feast of the Assumption is the annual celebration held in August that begins with a mass in honor of the Blessed Mother. The mass is followed by a procession that includes an Italian marching band which leads to the feast grounds. The feast grounds highlight carnival games and rides, live classical music, Italian food made by the Ladies Auxiliary and more. Charity WorkThe society collectively supports various communal causes and individual charity work. They also support well known organizations such as the American Red Cross, The Salvation Army, St. Jude’s Hospital, Island Harvest, Ronald McDonald House, and more.
