Hinshaw graduated with a Bachelors of Architecture, University of Okalahoma 1970, and a Masters of Urban Planning in 1972, Hunters College, NYC. He served in the United States Airforce as a 1st Lieutenant from 1972-1975 at Elmendorf Airforce Base. Hinshaw's influential career spanning the fields of architecture, urban planning & journalism has been recognized by the American Institute of Architecture, which elected him to the AIA College of Fellows in 1994. At that time, the AIA recognized his unique professional fusion which made him effective as the City of Bellevues Architect from 1982-1990, and his influence which was instrumental in the revitalization of their city center. He served as.[1] from 1992-1993. Hinshaw was subsequently elected to the College of Fellows for the American Institute of Certified Planners in 2007. More recently, Hinshaw has had a consulting practice which included his design and planning role as the Director of Urban Design with LMN Architects from 1995-2014, and starting in 2015, with Walker Macy Landscape Architects. In additon from 2015-2018 Hinshaw was overseeing the urban design of Yesler Terrace redevelopement project with the [2] Hinshaws popular column in the Seattle Times from 1991-2003, his articles in several magazines such as Architecture, Architectural Record & Landscape Architecture, has been followed by his more recent columns in [3]. He has been cited regularly and gained prominence and regard as a speaker and writer in a variety of local, national and international media, including the Seattle Times and the New York Times, among others. Currently, Hinshaw has retired and decamped from Seattle, to live in a small hillside town in the Le Marche region of Italy with his native Seattle wife who is of Italian heritage. They are creating an artistic retreat and healing center in Santa Vittoria in Matenano [4]. Hinshaw continues his prolific writing and is currently working on a new book.
